BANGKOK: Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha last night raised several issues to the attention of the Thai people when he addressed the nation during his "Returning Happiness to the People" TV programme Friday night.

They included drink driving, Miss Universe Contest, ASEAN Economic Community, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

He began his speech by congratulating “Nong Nat” or Miss Aniporn Chalermburanawong for bringing fame to the country when she made it to the final ten contestants running for Miss Universe 2015.

He said she made the country known to the world when she won Best National Costume award for her Tuk Tuk dress.

Her winning for best national costume has brought smiles and happiness for all Thais, Gen Prayut said.

As the New Year is coming near, he wished the people to have good health, and to enjoy New Year celebrations with joy and happiness.

But he stressed drink driving with warning that authorities would deal with violators seriously so as to ensure safety for other people sharing the same roads.

Authorities will deal with defiant drivers drastically, he said.

He talked about ASEAN Economic Community saying as December 31st is the official day for the AEC which comprises 10 nations in Southeast Asia, there would not be any imminent changes overnight.

But he said he has been preparing Thailand for such integration since he came to office.

Six strategies have been set and implemented to help the country achieve its goals after the AEC formation.

They include create understanding towards ASEAN, improve living standards and education, recruit workers with skills needed in ASEAN workforce market, develop information technology and communication, enhance mechanisms for exchanges and transfers, and strengthen regional connectivity.

He stressed the significance of English language as AEC started.

He urged all Thais to have the courage to speak the language, brushing aside fear of making grammatical errors.

The key to learning English is to listen and not to be shy and fear of making mistakes, he said.

International schools and bi-lingual schools would be promoted to set up across the country to provide English language courses to Thai students, and in rural areas, distance learning programmes will help them to improve their English.

He also urged business employers to arrange English training course for employees with strong potential to become team leaders and supervisors.

On illegal fishing issue, the prime minister admitted that he was concern about the European’s working team that will come January 20 to see whether Thailand has made any progress in IUU fishing.

But he said his government was determined to address the problem with all relevant agencies being ordered to report to the government every week.

This showed Thailand has taken the matter seriously to abide by the laws.

Yeah, impressive.

Made the country known by strapping one of the biggest scams in Thailand on some babe's back.

What a simpleton...

As is par for the course, yet another Friday full of nonsense...

But I like the way that he goes on and on about a language that he barely speaks himself...

However, in the spirit of the holidays, I'll refrain from calling him Khun Goh hok, and just wish him a one way ticket out of here for his New Years gift in 2016...

the last figures concerning economocally growth shows Thailand is at the bottom of all 10 ASEAN states. Did not happen during Thaksin and Yingluck.

So, General, did you something wrong? Or was the cake too big?

Good luck for 2016.

Nobody cares about Miss World.

You're not fooling anyone outside Thailand. Stop lying to the Thai people. Miss World does nothing for your country. You should be ashamed of yourself, you horrible little man.

Being Optimistic for the next year , Thank you Mr Prayut. Spending the vast amount of money on the road upgrades, once finished it will be a pleasure for my trips to work and back.

What ever your thoughts on other peoples actions and opinions, may you all have a good new year!

How does general Prayuth know so much about learning English I wonder... He himself can barely string a coherent sentence together and is wholly reliant on a translator when at all these engagements ovrrseas.

And the I.T focus he speaks of. Is it gonna be another re hash of the dreaded single gateway I wonder.

And still no talk about reforming the beleagured justice system and police force I see. Unsurprising

One can only observe that the staff, at the broadcaster we can trust, have taken junta-head's words literally.

They have certainly brushed aside any fear of making grammatical errors (as demonstrated in this article).
