Military shares New Year spirit

THAILAND -- THE MILITARY is jumping |on the holiday spirit band-|wagon by offering New Year’s gifts to all Thais by opening |up its facilities nationwide as tourist attractions.

Defence Ministry spokesman Maj-General Kongcheep Tantravanich said the ministry has instructed its officials in charge of supervising all tourist attractions under its supervision to welcome tourists without charge during the New Year.

The attractions include the renowned Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy, Sattahip Naval Base and other facilities which "would ensure sound and safe visits for tourists".

Kongcheep said the military would also back up police officers at road checkpoints countrywide to ensure safety during New Year trips.

Hmmm....a takeover I suspect.....well there is money to be made.

Apologies to the ones who think I am too cynical !

No - the average soldier would not dare to do that. Their bosses get their graft in other ways.

It is to keep a lookout for red-shirt terrorists who would happily murder innocent people out celebrating.

Kongcheep said the military would also back up police officers at road checkpoints countrywide to ensure safety during New Year trips.

The Navy would also set up security safeguards along the coasts to help ensure safety for tourists spending their holidays on beaches.

The military would work around the clock with the |police to provide security for |New Year revellers, especially at major events, the spokesman added.

Kongcheep said that while people spend their New Year holidays with families, a lot of military officers must guard risk-prone areas, including those along the borders.

He invited people to share their New Year wishes with these officers through the mailing of postcards and letters to available postal addresses of major military bases countrywide.
