Walking Street

Hello my Thai gf and myself are in beautiful Pattaya for the New Year. We want to check out Walking Street and want to hear from anyone who has some experience in this area. We have heard about some people being cajoled into buying more drinks than they want, harassed by women in ping pong shows or bars and even people being frog marched to ATMs to pay for exorbitant bar bills if they refuse to pay up. Also what influence does the Russian mafia here, are they everywhere? My gf had also heard that Thai people are banned from entering places like ping pong shows probably so farangs can be conned more easily. Interested to hear some stories good and bad. What do to/not do and even recommendations for places to go/avoid like the plague. Cheers!

Many things influence what happens here. How drunk do you and your gf get is a biggy. Are you prone to arqueing is another. Have you travelled before and have travel smarts another biggy. do you spend with out thinking of costs? Are you demanding? Are you easy going?

What I am saying there is no one answer to your questions. It comes down to the person and how they act and what they know. Some people come here do not have a clue. Others are aware and catch on quickly.

I my advice is follow your instincts and learn as you go.

No where is dangerous if you are aware of whats going on around you. Thailand is safe is you arenot stupid.

It's a normal place…the only people who get into trouble there are people who are abnormal or too trusting.

You shouldn't have a problem anywhere, don't stray too far from your gf or leave her alone….on walking street anyone in a lady dress is fair game for punters…she may get a few requests for companionship.

Both easy going in nature, willing to spend but aware of the cost of things here and obviously don't want to be ripped off. We would never argue in public either, such is the Thai way, and wouldn't get drunk much. Thanks for your advice, sounds sensible.

Just avoid the 2 or maybe 3 ? Russian places .They are easy to spot with a Western looking girl dancing in a glass box about the street .With a bit of luck ,they are now closed down ,as they were raided by the Police last night.

Sure, understand we'll stay together then. We're actually curious to go to to a ping pong show. Any recommendations/advice? Any other places to recommend??

For cheap drinks look for the drink promotions carried by the girls outside .Usually there is a time limit ie ,before 8.30 pm etc .When i lived down there i would often do a tour (usually on my own ) having a cheap draft beer at each place .That was 6 years ago a draft beer was around B60 then.I have only been to one ping pong show down a little lane off the main street and it did not impress me .Never went back .

Go to Windmill inside soi diamond….not just ping pong balls coming out….bring anything you want from the supermarket…they will shoot it out the vajayjay for you (for a few baht of course)

Some hints already written...

Use common sense.

Don't get too drunk. Keep cool. Step back, avoid confrontation.

Pretend not to understand just in case.

Smile even to the ugliest of "ladyboys" (transsexuals) and walk on.

Watch out for farang drunks and troublemakers, get out of their way, don't get involved in discussion with them.

Avoid all touts and sellers on the street, ignore them. No "picture with monkey" etc. Walk on.

Don't follow the touts advertising "ping pong show".

There are more attractive shows to see.

Windmill mentioned can get quite wild .Its a small place ,and they try to go the extra mile .

Only if you are in the mood .Otherwise it can just be a pain in the rear .Two places i liked a lot was Baby dolls and Peppermint ,just for looking .I have been back about 8 months ago but things can change overnight.

The show at Angelwitch (down a small soi off WS with other places) is worth going to - or at least it used to be.

Quite tame however and nothing as overt as ping pong balls unless it has changed?

which soi is that

Comes out in WS opposite I think to New Simon Beer Bar Complex (the one with Frog Bar at the front) or Candy Shop.

In that area and there is a great big sign on WS itself.

Opening times vary. Some GoGos open as early as 19h (the time when "walking" street begins).

Most at 20h as far as I remember.

Unfortunately some places will have limited staff (girls)/not in full swing until happy hour is over (like 21h, 21:30h).

The other two questions are not my domain.

Walking Street is tame compared to a decade ago and relly very safe to walk around. The ping pong show touts only ask if your interested but don't press the point if your not

Opening times for the gogo bars start for a few at 7pm but the majority open at 8pm or later.

Show gogo places, meaning amateur gynaecologists ones are Windmill and to a lesser degree its sister place Sugarbaby, also Babydolls but that one is far tamer.

The girls who are prepared to work in these places and to participate in such acts are quite ugly as good looking girls just don't need to.

Pretty sure that some are on some sort of medication, prescribed or not, to desensitize them both physically and mentally from what they are doing and having done to them by the patrons.

The Russian places are open and have been since the night following the raid.

These are my very recent experiences as I have some family over from back home who just wanted to see what they were like.

Personally I find the gyno places disgusting but the normal type of gogo,s are okay for a few drinks and some eye candy.

The emphasis has really changed from being one of the girls looking for a "boyfriend" for the night or a short period of time so they are taken away from the place, to one of the girls getting drinks bought for them and being hostesses who are only there for their drinks commission and salary until closing time.

Getting far more like Vegas but without the casinos in that..

IMO no, not a very nice place.

As for ping pong shows I thought they were a thing of the past although no doubt it still goes on.

Up to you of course but I'd stick to Walking st and the bigger gogo's.

I had a bar off of Walking st for almost 13 years and although I haven't been there since August 2014 I have never been concerned about Russian Mafia influence etc, same as being conned for drinks, if you look at the prices first etc no problems.

I would avoid the Russian dance clubs personally as you probably will get stuck for high prices and tips.

:)

I do not think we should be talking in graphic details as to what goes on in the bars...

But your description of the Windmill tells me nothing has changed in the last 10 to 15 years, after the first ten minutes it was just as boring then, probably still the same ladies...
