Bus drivers say protests will continue

Fifty former Capitol Bus Company drivers protested in front of their ex-employer’s office near Phnom Penh’s O’Russey Market yesterday claiming they had been unduly fired, while the company defended the legality of their action. Hin Moeun, who had worked as a driver for five years before he was fired, said that in the past month the company had dismissed some 45 drivers over alleged breaches of company policy such as picking up passengers while mid-route.

Moeun called these “excuses”, saying the company was displeased with drivers attempting to unionise. In July, a protest occurred when the company fired five drivers who wanted to form a union. The demonstration lasted from 7am to 1pm, and while some 40 police officers seized drums and microphones, they did not clash with protesters.
