Sweden - Denmark: Passport free travel is over

STOCKHOLM: -- For the first time since the 1950s, from midnight on Sunday travelers going from Denmark to Sweden by train, bus or boat will need to present a valid photo ID, such as a passport, to enter Sweden from its southern neighbor. There are penalties for tour operators who fail to impose checks. Passengers who fail to present a satisfactory document will be turned back.

The move marks a turning point for the Swedish ruling coalition of Social Democrats and Greens, which earlier presented itself as a beacon to people fleeing conflict and terror in Asia and the Middle East.

Sweden is set to drastically reduce the flow of refugees into the country by imposing strict identity checks on all travelers from Denmark, as Scandinavian countries compete with each other to shed their reputations as havens for asylum seekers.

Can all of us that said it was all a very bad idea to allow unlimited numbers of so called asylum seekers into Europe now say "I told you so"!

Couple of things to think about:

As the more northerly parts of Euro close the doors, will Greece and Italy continue to "rescue" those that venture out on unsafe boats and convey them to Greece and Italy, knowing that they will be stuck with them, as not able to send them off for some other country to look after, or will they start to return them whence they came?

How does Greece pay for this, given that they were begging for money because they were broke.

BTW, winter has arrived in Europe- temps down to -30C. Can we expect to see many of them asking to go back home before they freeze to death?

As often is the case, the abuse by some results in ruining it for everybody else.

Abuse !! What is ruined by showing a passport or photo id ??

It is to track possible Terrorists. Their borders were to soft; and the terrorist knew it.

Too little too late.

OK, I'll be the first to say it..if Sweden & Denmark suspend passport-free travel then the terrorists have already won!

You are the first and only person, who would say it. Showing photo id, is common sense. It does not mean they have to show their passport.

They can show a drivers lic. or any other photo id ! Their borders were soft, to drug dealers, slave labor, and terrorists.

So,What happen to The Great European Union open to "Socialist ideas' of free and cooperating governments between the nations? Socialism does not work unless the state is run by a totalitarian government as were the old communist nations.A nation can not do this in a semi democratic republic.

Sweden and Germany are shining examples of countries which didn't anticipate so many immigrants from entering the country. Sweden in particular is unable to cope with the growing demand since housing in particular is in short supply. Then of course is the money it will cost, naturally something will have to give. In order to pay peter, first you must take from Paul.

Starting to come to their senses...Oslo is not Mecca. Unfortunately, so much damage hs been done to these societies by foolish immigration policies that it's probably too little too late.

Is Norway involved in this as well?

If not they should be ?

Nice try, but next time better get your geography in order.

For Americans, Norway, Sweden, and Finland are all one place in the mind. But you're right, Stockholm is not Mecca either.

Sweden imposes border checks to stem flow of migrants

STOCKHOLM: -- For the first time since the 1950s Sweden is imposing border checks on rail and road travellers entering the country from neighbouring Denmark. It’s a move designed to “curb the flow of asylum seekers“

From now on everyone coming into Sweden will have to present a valid photo ID, such as a passport to Swedish border security

“In order to avoid domestic passengers to get mixed up in a pass-Control they will remain on one side of the fence and passengers travelling from Denmark will end up on the other side. And those are the ones who will be checked, “ said Director of operations at Malmö Police Department, Paul Juhlin.

The imposition of the new rules is being seen as another blow to the Schengen treaty. It also represents a substantial policy U-turn from a country that for much of 2015 operated an open-door policy towards the migrants crossing from Turkey to the Greek islands and heading northwards.

Sweden had expected to accept about 100, 000 newcomers in 2015, but by year’s end the figure was almost twice that, and the country was struggling to provide shelter, education and other essential services for would-be asylum seekers. Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said in November that the country’s generosity had been “naive”.

There have been mixed reactions to the imposition of the border checks.

Used to show passport all the time travelling in Europe in those good old days, no problem, kind of was exciting.

Yes, it was so exciting to sit in the car for hours until we reached the border control, even when just traveling from Germany to Austria or Holland.

And these exciting news on the radio when they announced the hours or days that truck drivers had to wait until they finally could continue delivering their freight to a neighboring country.
