Visa and Disability

Featured Replies

Hi i am hoping someone might know the answers to my visa question...

I am australian male mid forties and i have been to thailand 3 times before but only stayed on 3 week trips so i know nothing about visas etc... I am on a disability and i have a mental illness and i am wondering does anyone know if this will be a problem in getting a 3 month tourist visa....I have asked immigration here and they say being on disability wont affect my application for a visa but then i read on the application form that when you arrive at bangkok the immigration there decides if and how long you can stay. what is that all about? I dont mind them knowing i have a disability but i think if its a mental illness it will be looked upon poorly, will they have to know?

Someone mentioned coming on the normal 3 week trip with no visa and then going to laos and coming back but i just thought it would be the same problem, i have no idea so i am just throwing up some questions...Maybe it wont matter i dont know but any advice would be greatful but im sure somone out there has a mental illness and travels...

I am stable on my meds and i do have a person i stay with in thailand if that helps...

Cheers.

If entering Thailand on a valid single entry tourist visa obtained in Australia you should not have any issues entering the country on personal medical grounds, this won't be raised upon entering.

A tourist visa will give a stay of 60 days which can be extended at any immigration office in Thailand for 1900 baht.

Enjoy your holiday.

Thanks for replying stoneyboy that sounds very positive..i hope your right ... cheers

  • Your disability or illness will not stop you getting a tourist visa. They do not ask about either on the application form.
  • IO's at the border can let a tourist visa holders stay for a maximum of 60 days. They can reduce that but wouldn't based on disability.
  • Someone considered to be mentally unstable can be denied entry under the immigration act. But unless the illness was visible the IO would have no way of knowing about your mental health.

Immigration act

4. Being mentally unstable or having any of the disease as prescribed in the Ministerial Regulations.

Given that the OP has entered the country on 3 occasions in the past it's highly unlikely he will encounter any problems the fourth time around.

I don't anticipate that you will have any problems. Make sure that you have an ample supply of meds and/or a source to replenish them in Thailand. Have a safe and enjoyable trip!

I will just post this in case someone else might want to know.... i just talked to lady at thai embassy canberra ( which i should have done in the first place) and she said for a tourist visa it wont matter and they dont need to know what disability i have.... that sounds very positive.

Thanks for your replies guys

What did you put on your previous visa applications?

Incidentally, disability pensioner is not a profession. If, before getting ill, you were working as a plumber or a rocket scientist, you are still a plumber or rocket scientist by profession, even if you are not currently exercising your profession for one reason or another, and that is what you would put on the form, plumber or rocket scientist.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Actually no as he does not get a pension which is a permanent payment. The disability genifit is one of a much shorter period with constant reviews possible and thus is a Benifit as it provides no certainty.
