Iran seizes two US Navy boats after straying into Iranian-claimed waters

WASHINGTON: -- Iranian military forces have taken two US Navy boats into custody after allegedly straying into Iranian-claimed waters.

Ten American sailors are being held on Iran’s Farsi island in the middle of the Persian Gulf.

The two ships were apparently engaged in a training exercise, moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when they were seized.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has assured US Secretary of State John Kerry that the crews will be allowed to continue their journey “promptly”.

Pentagon: 2 US Navy boats held by Iran but will be returned
By LOLITA C. BALDOR

WASHINGTON (AP) — Iran was holding 10 U.S. Navy sailors and their two small Navy boats after the boats had mechanical problems and drifted into Iranian waters, but American officials have received assurances from Tehran that they will be returned safely and promptly.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told The Associated Press that the riverine boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the U.S. lost contact with them.

U.S. officials said that the incident happened near Farsi Island, situated in the Persian Gulf. They said that some type of mechanical trouble with one of the boats caused them to run aground and they were picked up by Iran. The sailors were in Iranian custody on Farsi Island at least for some time, but it's not certain where they are now.

The semi-official Iranian news agency, FARS, said the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's navy has detained 10 foreign forces, believed to be Americans, and said the sailors were trespassing in Iranian waters. FARS also reported that one of the 10 sailors was a woman.

"We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly," Cook said.

The incident came amid heightened tensions with Iran, and only hours before President Barack Obama was set to deliver his final State of the Union address to Congress and the public. It set off a dramatic series of calls and meetings as U.S. officials tried to determine the exact status of the crew and reach out to Iranian leaders.

Secretary of State John Kerry, who forged a personal relationship with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif through three years of nuclear negotiations, called Zarif immediately on learning of the incident, according to a senior U.S. official. Kerry "personally engaged with Zarif on this issue to try to get to this outcome," the official said.

Kerry learned of the incident around 12:30 p.m. EST as he and Defense Secretary Ash Carter were meeting their Filipino counterparts at the State Department, the official said.

The officials were not authorized to discuss the sensitive incident publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity.

The incident came on the heels of an incident in late December when Iran launched a rocket test near U.S. warships and boats passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, Iran is expected to satisfy the terms of last summer's nuclear deal in just days. Once the U.N. nuclear agency confirms Iran's actions to roll back its program, the United States and other Western powers are obliged to suspend wide-ranging oil, trade and financial sanctions on Tehran. Kerry recently said the deal's implementation was "days away."

"...claimed waters." Things will clarify over the next hours as to what happened but the details are irrelevant. At a certain point no one gives a crap about another song and dance apology tour by the Left defending Iran and praising Obama's deft diplomacy with the Persian Theocracy. It is now an endless stream of increased Iranian "smoke" over the last months. At some point people will have to concede there is "fire." As [we] have said here on TV months ago, the failure of the false agreement directly and as a measure of any improved relations will reveal itself "sooner rather than later." Here is one more sooner. Expect Iran to be involved in all sorts of exciting new year adventures. Expect all of Obama's new buddies to make lots of new and bold changes, before the dolt leaves.

It is truly amazing. I cannot imagine a real world fool that could so consistently screw up every single thing touched as Obama does. He is like the Anti-King Midas.

Sorry, but how can Obama be blamed for this. According to new reports, one boat became disabled and drifted into Iranian waters. I guess it's because Obama isn't a good mechanic? laugh.png

His fault if his boats aren't equipped with an anchor. Basic boating stuff that is, when the engine is rooted throw over the anchor and remain in situ - not just drift willy-nilly or it could lead to problems...

We don't know all the facts, and probably never will. The US navy has some of the best equipment in the world...and some of the best trained sailors. Second to none. With that being said, problems will always arise. It's the nature of the beast.

Thanks for kick starting my heart rate with humor this morning. It's Obama's fault! He, no doubt was on both of the small boats involved in the training exercise. Keep up your head of steam, you will have plenty to complain about after Bernie takes office....ha! Or yes, if Trump goes in as a bull in the china shop.

They are not "his" boats, if you are an American, they are "our" boats and as citizens it is we who are ultimately responsible for what we are paying to support, including sending young men and women in harm's way.x

At least they didn't blow them out of the water like fellow NATO member Turkey did with the russian plane recently.

exactly !!

the Navy just did the job they supposed to do, and contacted the owner of the Boats as well ...

some other countries (including the US) could learn somethings from that.

I think "truther" actually stands for "conspiracy theorist". What exactly has Obama screwed up in this instance? I don't believe he ordered our navy into Iranian territorial waters to be caught. I am not sticking up for Iran here but the US would have certainly done the same if the Iranian military wandered into our territorial waters. Now it is up to the Iranians to do the right thing. As for the international agreement to remove sanctions in regards to the Iranian nuclear program, Obama and the other 4 national as well as the UN deserve credit for making the world a safer place. The Revolutionary Guard which have detained US servicemen today are also against the agreement so they are actually in agreement with you. Friends?

You're comparing a disabled boat that accidentally drifted into another nation's waters versus a combat plane that was repeatedly warned and was bombing not only combatants but also innocent civilians AND intentionally crossed another nation's border? Really???? Wow...quite a stretch.

What a rant. The Iranians would have done this no matter who was in the White House.

Apologist for Iranian Revolutionary Guards? Apologist. Yechh. would you also claim that the US has things to learn from the Iranian propensity of sacking and/or taking over other countries' embassies??

Washington and Tehran are talking on this which they had not done concerning anything for more than 30 years.

This just occurred, however there aren't any lightening bolts zapping back and forth which was the only way it used to be. We can quite thank the P5+1 and Iran successful negotiations for establishing multiple government to government relations and cooperative interaction.

Indications are that the sailors will not become an issue nor will they suffer at the hands of Iranians, despite the manglers of the Republican Guards.

Twice, in 2004 and again in 2007 Iranian navy took British sailors briefly then set them loose. The first group was treated harshly, the second group was given chocolates on their release after 13 days. I think Iran knows what it needs to do (and should do) in this very different instance and time.

Wrong. Read history . When Iran took those hostages during Carter's presidency,

they rubbed his nose in shit for 444 days. The day Reagan took over as president

is the day they let them all go. They knew what was going to happen. So who

the president is DOES matter.

As I firmly believe Obama is a closet Muslim, this kind of trouble in the mid east

must pose a serious personal problem to him. Which Muslims to help ??????

With Obama in charge I suggest people start collecting yellow ribbons.

Which is a typical comment from the mis-informed brigade who in light of Obama removing troops and exiting wars, are still chasing non existent WMDs......

It is you who is sadly misinformed.

Add another U.S businessman detained in October last. The Iranians keep doing this with impunity knowing that the POTUS has nothing but dust for his legacy, save a deal with Iran, which will duly deliver the world radioactive dust.

I'm no conspiracy guy but I doubt there were technical problems and I doubt the sailors were just on a training mission.

Yes because Reagan was purer than the driven snow and would never have sent emissaries to secretly negotiate with Iran to keep the hostages in order to improve his chances of winning an election.

All those people that know about the October surprise are clearly all lying.

You stick to your good old Republican version of history and believe that things like this and Iran-Contra had nothing to do with Reagan.

So let me get this right, you are trying to portray it as a positive that the Iranians were gifted $100 billion dollars, sanctions regimes were destroyed and Iran's illegal nukes program was made legal, because it opens a channel to talk to the Iranians now they have abducted ten U.S citizens?
