Report after travel

Featured Replies

A friend said that when an expat resident travels, whether domestic or international travel - after return they are supposed to report to the nearest police station their address. If it is a hotel, the hotel does this report. This is different than immigration 90 day reporting, What do you all know about this?

You do not need to report to the police. That is a law that is not enforced.

  • Your friend is talking about the TM30 form which the owner, house-master, possessor, hotel/guesthouse manager are supposed to send/give to immigration whenever a foreigner moves in to or stays at their property.
  • Technically it should be done every time you travel, but most offices do not seem to enforce that. As long as it's done once, when you first move in, there should not be any issues.
  • You could be considered jointly responsible if immigration consider you the possessor of a private property, but in most cases they fine the owner.
  • The standard fine is 800 baht but it can be as much as 2,000. There are no consequences beyond a fine.

2. Question : What do the house-master/owner or possessor of the residence have to do,if the alien granted temporary stay in Thailand has stayed in his/her house/residence? (Is it possible for an agent to do for?)

Answer : He/She (The owner of the residence) must notify (by the Form TM.30) to the competent official Of the Immigration Office located in the same area of that house/residence within 24 hours from the time of arrival of the alien. However, such notification could be made in person or by an agent or sent with completed Form( TM.30) by registered post.

Recently when I went to renew my extension of stay (Retirement), the Immigration Officer could not enter my application on the computer. I was told that I did not re-register my address after traveling abroad. I had to re-register my address before they can proceed with my application. Apparently Thai Immigration have record of your departure card when you leave Thailand. Luckily I was not fined for the 3 months that was not reported.

Yes, immigration has a record of your departure card. After all, it was to Immigration that you have the card when you left the country.

Regarding your retirement extension, did you write a different address on the application form compared to what you used for your previous application. What immigration office was this?

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

It is the "house master" of the place where you are staying who has to report your arrival. What your immigration officer meant with your having to re-register your address, if those are the words he used, I am unable to guess.

But to be clear: TM30 is when you are going to report your address to the immigration and they give you a paper that is attached in your passport? This paper in your passport is called "Receipt of notification"? This "registration" must be done only if you change your main residence address, not everytime you travel abroad or stay temporarily somewhere else?

Example: I am on Non O multi entry one year. I actually work in Myanmar and I back to Thailand every week ends. The receipt of notification in my passport stated my address in Phuket, which the owner of the house is actually my son. This week end, I will enter Thailand but I won't go back to Phuket but to Bangkok only. I will be staying in a hotel where registration to immigration will be done by the hotel. Next Monday, I will go out of Thailand and re-enter Thailand on the next Friday, this time going straight back home to Phuket where my address is registered the notification of receipt in my passport. Will the fact that i will been recorded in Bangkok for a weekend will affect my registration in Phuket? Or in others terms, is this registration of permanent address permanent until you change your permanent address only, whenever you are going out /in the country regularly, staying in others places sometime, get a new passport? Thanks

I did not change address. I still live in my "permanent" address.

The "house master" is not always in town. I did the very first registration on his behalf with document supplied by him. When I did my re-registration before they processed my new extension, no document was required.

When a foreigner moves in/stays the TM30 report can be done by the house-master, owner or possessor of the property, probably for that reason.

Unfortunately immigration are complicating things by using TM30 forms (which they want completed only by the house-master who is usually the owner) with extension of stay applications as a form of proof of address. I've had to provide a new TM30 at my last two extension renewals even though I haven't left the country or changed my address.

Also, as the immigration computer system stands only the arrival at an address is registered (TM30) but not the departure. So if someone goes and stays in a hotel for a few days immigration get notified of the new address. If you then return home the hotel address will stay on the system until a new TM30 is submitted confirming that your back at your home address. If you go and stay with friends/family nothing changes. If you exit the country the system shows you as leaving the country, therefore, a new TM30 should be completed on return even if you return to the same address.

The problem is that the immigration system doesn't acknowledge a permanent address as such. Just the last notified address. So if you stay in a Bangkok hotel your address record will be changed. Technically someone should submit a new TM30 on return to Phuket.

Thanks everyone. Still confusing. So, where is the TM.30 form and if my landowner lives elsewhere, what do i do? Go to immigration or the police station? What about the 90 day report, does that have any bearing on this TM.30?

It all depends upon the immigration office for where you live. Many never ask for a TM30.

I am on my 8th extension and have never been asked for one. I have stayed in hotels that I am sure did the report and that changed nothing.

The is no relationship between 90 day reports and a TM30.report.

Why do you think a TM30 reports by a hotel changes nothing? Surely there would be no point to it if that were the case.

I've been told that our address gets updated on the system from arrival cards, TM30 reports, 90 day reports, extensions of stay applications and changes of address notifications.

You can download the TM30 here. http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/en/base.php?page=download

The TM30 can be sent in by post. If reporting your arrival at an address the immigration office might let you complete it as the possessor of the property. At the end of the day it's the owner that should be getting this done.

I've been told that our address gets updated on the system from arrival cards, TM30 reports, 90 day reports, extensions of stay applications and changes of address notifications.

The reports hotels do are stored in a different data base than what the address you use when you get an extension or do a TM28 change of address. Not sure if the arrival card would change the one the extension records are kept in.

The 90 report records are only kept at the local office where the report is done. If you have a different address on a report it will be noted.

I am on touristvisa and when i applied 30 day extension to my visa this TM30 procedure was needed. Now my passport is stapled with this notification of address with some sort of stamp and my address in thai..

When i have used my 30 day extension my idea is to go to Phnom Penh for a week or two and same time apply a new tourist visa. When i do that, should i remove this piece of paper from my passport or leave it ?

You can leave it or take it out. If you take it out keep it to try and use for the next extension.
