WHO declares Liberia free of Ebola

GENEVA: -- The World Health Organisation has declared that Liberia is free of Ebola.

It means the latest outbreak of the deadly disease is effectively over.

The WHO said there have been forty two days without a new case being reported in the West African country.

Guinea and Sierra Lone were declared free of Ebola last year.

The EU’s humanitarian aid commissioner admits Brussels was too slow to react.

“We are now setting up a European medical corps, together with our member states, mobilising medical personal and equipment from our member states for a joint response on the ground,” Christos Stylianides told euronews.

Thursday’s declaration from the WHO comes because it is 42 days since Liberia’s last Ebola patient tested negative.

Ebola has claimed more than 11,000 lives since the end of 2013.
