PATTAYA: Police interviewed the vendor thought to have been involved in an incident on Larn Island on Tuesday whereby he is alleged to have threatened two Chinese Tourists who were “forced” to handover 12,000 Baht for 4 plastic wallets.

The vendor, Khun Apichar aged 45, who claims to have worked trouble-free on the Island for many years, was taken to Pattaya Police Station and claimed the two Tourists purchased 4 wallets and a leather belt for 12,000 Baht and in no way were threatened by him and handed over the money willingly.

Police then went to the Grand Jomtien Hotel to talk, once again, with the two Chinese Men, Mr. Chen Lei aged 43 and Mr. Xu Guangming aged 45, but reception informed them that the pair had checked-out the day after the incident took place.

Wow.

1. Who in their right mind will pay 12,000 baht for 4 wallets and a belt?

2. The police intentional move slow since tourist mean having to stay with the tour. Because certainly the cops nor the vendor is going to reimburse the tourist for missing flights.

All we are seeing and the vendor is hearing, keep targeting tourist. They have to leave.

so, 350 dollars for 4 wallets and a belt. i'm sure they were made of the finest plastic. sounds about right, sure. and why do they put the word incident in quotes?? it sounds like a genuine incident of some kind to me.

Police investigate, well that's a new one.

Does sound a bit pricey; probably an unfortunate misunderstanding and an honest mistake.

Perhaps the hard working, fair minded, and conscientious police could negotiate a refund of...say...10,000 Baht and arrange to have it used as compensation for those who were inconvenienced.

That would solve the problem nicely.

All in a day's work.

how do i get a gig selling plastic wallets for thousands of baht?

i would only sell to Russians.

12k baht? could have been a nice party on walking street.

...they took their time getting around to it....

...they must have had the plaintiffs' itinerary.....

...what a joke....

I think that one of those special protected Thai jobs...

Yeah, right!

"The case can go no further without the two Chinese men and Police are unsure if the crime took place and if this was another false Insurance claim by foreign tourists, which are very common in Pattaya."

Why are so many assuming the Thai is the guilty party here? I remember a Dane and a pair of Aussies recently who lied about being "victims"......

You're Welcome!! smile.png

To put a different slant on this - could the tourists made a mistake on the exchange rate by a factor of 10, realised their mistake but later realised and want their money back.

Maybe the belt was made of crocodile skin.........?

Could the vendor have made a mistake and added a zero to the price.

To charge 12000 for 4 plastic wallets and a belt is extortion, especially when they were forced.

A Chinese woman I worked with in China came on holiday here and handed 3 x 1000 baht notes over to a Tuk Tuk driver in Bangkok. He had asked for 300 baht. He drove off and only later it dawned on the woman what she had done. The largest denomination RMB / Yuan note is 100. She was still thinking in her money... Lucky for me I have never done this with Pounds.....

So Geordie59 could well be right.

These were Chinese, not farangs. Police had to appear to be doing SOMEthing... Thais are learning that Chinese are off-limits to their shenanigans.

Because as it seems they've legged it it's very possible that the incident didn't happen as the Chinese reported regardless of whether you consider it genuine.

What a joke...just because the report was published today doesn't mean that the vendor's interview only took place today, there's no mention of interview dates in the report it could have been the day following the incident.

I think that you missed the point of the article, no force was used.
