DPM Somkid: Thailand's competitiveness depends on technology, entrepreneurs' vision

BANGKOK, 19 January 2016, (NNT) – The Deputy Prime Minister for economic affairs has claimed that Thailand's competitiveness depends on advancements in technology and its entrepreneurs having a shared understanding of the country’s economic direction.

Deputy Prime Minister for economic affairs Somkid Jatusripitak said the key factor undermining Thailand's competitiveness is political instability, adding that the government is doing its utmost to improve the situation.

Dr. Somkid made the comments during talks co-hosted by the Department of Trade Negotiations and the International Institute for Management Development (IMD). Commerce Minister Apiradee Tantraporn explained that the talks were aimed at raising awareness of the nation’s competitiveness. She added that a subsequent discussion will be held on January 20.

The IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook, an annual report that rates the performance of 62 countries, indicated that Thailand's competitiveness was ranked 29th in 2014 and 30th in 2015.

I would have thought 65% dependency is on the skill, knowledge and discipline of Thai labour. Perhaps he has in mind fully automated production?

First of all I wonder who the person was he got this insight from, and secondly why the person did not mention these would be the last two things he can expect in this country.

In 2013 Thailand was ranked 27th.

Maybe Somkid thought the higher the ranking the better?

It is my experience that Thai businesses generally don't want to spend anything on new technology. The concept of equipment or technology becoming obsolete and in need of replacement is simply foreign to most. Culturally, thinking is pretty short term; as my wife puts it, "no one will know what will happen tomorrow."

I am also unsure what vision is meant; the entrepreneurs' vision of there business in 15 years, or the entrepreneurs' understanding of the government's vision of what the entrepreneur is supposed to be thinking about the Thai economy.

some startups are shut down becasue they compete with business that thai monopolies have already taken control of.

other companies shut down because thais will prefer the cheap Chinese version over quality versions.

and EVEN MORE companies cant compete because thai owners take the money and buy expencive crap they cant afford at the cost of upgrading their companies competitiveness in the regional area.

while companies who can compete are shut down because thais enjoy making up strange new fines to charge them with. (like 3million baht fine for apartments operating like hotels...... but brothels are untouched. How can farmers compete with brothels who use up all the water??? HOW?!

Thailand was always a manufacturing location for foreign companies like the car makers and airconditioner makers; think Japanese well known brands. How does it suddenly move into high tech for Thai companies with a largely uneducated population?
