Next week, Cambodia will join a conference focused on stopping the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). The conference, to be held in Washington D.C. on January 27th, is part of the US-led Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), started in 2003 to keep bomb parts from falling into the hands of terrorists or rogue states.

The National Counter-Terrorism Committee spokesman for Cambodia could not confirm who is being sent as the country’s representatives. Coming in the wake of an alleged thermonuclear warhead test by North Korea, the conference will focus on new ways that illegal weapon parts could be smuggled between countries, and what kind of border controls are necessary to stop the trade.

Cambodia joined the PSI in 2008, committing to help block the flow of materials that could be used to make WMDs. The country has tightened its border security in the years since, with help from officials from the U.S. Department of Energy, who helped train customs officials and set up radiation-detecting equipment at Sihanoukville Port in 2010.
