I was walking in the town where I lived in the UK about 30 years ago and a copper stopped me and asked if I would like to take part in an identity parade. I turned down his offer but asked him to ask my friend to do it instead. I am white my friend was black. The cop smiled and said "no"

How racist was he !!!

Dude, just stop and think about it, that has nothing to do with racism.

appearance, for many Thais is everything, but I have a Thai friend who dresses like me (pretty badly) but I dont care what anyone else thinks based on looks.

Who knows the real reason your friend was stopped, you can be stopped here for no reason except they want to stop you.

I remember the Uk Police used to play some car stopping game like traffic lights ie stop a red yellow and then green car.

Any "academic" who has read the Old Testament, of the so-called Holy Bible, can easily decipher the the profound level of "black-on-black" people racism, during that period of Middle Eastern (Asia Minor) regional history. As a matter of fact, there were no white people present, in that region of the world, at that time.

The point is that racism is historically more rooted in genealogy, rather than skin-color. Current examples are the caste systems of India, Sri Lanka, and the prevailing tribal rifts within the Sudan. Skin-color racism is prascticed more by people, of whom do not possess the ability to see, beyond the tips of their noses. End of story. whistling.gif

So if you dont think thais are racist towards blacks.. An "interesting" (not) Thai Drama called "ผู้หญิงคนนั้นชื่อบุญรอด" episode 16 set in Thailand around the time of the Vietnam War, this is actually a new show on TV last month. One of the thai women bring an American soldier home to meet the family who is a farang.. At first the mother wanted to take this farang to show everyone in the home town..When the family found out he was black have a look how they act... Go to the 35m 15seconds

If you have a thai wife get her to translate some of the things the mother says when she goes outside.. Or if you understand.. Its pretty bad stuff she says.. However just how they act and the stupid sounds are enough.

The mother is depicted as a narrow minded bigot in a manner very reminiscent of the Archie Bunker character in the American TV show 'All in the Family.' The entire family implores her to be more open-minded and is frustrated and embarrassed by her unwelcoming attitude. This is a social satire sitcom; scarcely representative of Thai culture in general. Shame on you for attempting to mischaracterize this video to those who don't speak Thai.

I think there are just some farangs just want to feel that Thailand is a place where the only acceptable non-Thai Johnson is a WHITE Johnson

It weird really because the typical farang knows that Thai women will tell him exactly what he wants to hear - the classic "Thai-man-no-good" springs to mind - but when the bar strumpet tells him, "I not go with chocolate man" or "Not go with kaek", he sucks it up like a Dyson.

It stems from insecurity about anything from penis size to fear of loss and it's pathetic

So do you think this dude was arrested due to racial profiling by the police?

Talk of Johnsons aside.

Interesting perspective. So could you [edit: explain] why the family that has seen the guy before are laughing before the mother sees him.

Starting from 35 m. The siblings are saying that the daughter has found a foreign husband. They discuss what language he speaks, and they tell the mother that he is able to speak Thai, which is good, because she will be able to talk with him easier. The siblings know beforehand that the foreign husband is black but the mother doesn't know. The siblings are smirking and exchanging looks with one another because they (and the audience) know the mother has assumed the new husband is white and will be surprised to discover the foreign husband is black. What the siblings don't anticipate is how negatively the mother will react.

It turns out the mother is shocked to discover the husband is black. When the black husband is introduced, the mother asks him if he can speak Thai. He says, "A little bit, dear mother of my wife." The mother does not react well to being called "Mom" by the new husband, and again has a mock fainting spell. It is difficult to make out exactly what the mother is saying outside because her lines are delivered in a tearful voice, but the gist of the conversation is:

Woman in the pink blouse: "You said you wanted her to find a foreign husband, and she found a foreign husband, why on earth are you crying?"

Mother: (paraphrased) I had no idea he was black, I was expecting a handsome rich white guy. What are the neighbors going to say?

The siblings and family friends ALL counsel her to have a more open mind and to be more accepting. Towards the end of the scene I believe they are pointing out examples of so-and-so who doesn't have a husband, trying to keep things in perspective. These Thai dramas always have a moral message, and clearly the message in this scene was racial acceptance. The mother's narrow-mindedness was presented in a very unflattering light, so using this clip to support a claim that Thais are racially biased is unfair.

Please note that in the video clip the black African man is referred to a farang. Contrary to what is often repeated on TVF, the term farang is NOT used exclusively for white foreigners, but rather as a general term for any non-Asian foreigner.

Also, please take a look at the 50 YouTube comments made for this video clip. Just one comment makes a pejorative reference to the black guy. I recognize that the scene in question is only one sub-plot of this drama, but it does say something that the YouTube comments made by Thais didn't obsess about the daughter's choice of a black person for a husband, and did not elicit heavy duty racist comments. Contrast this with the type of racist comments a similar video in America or Europe might elicit.

In plain English, I reiterate "Skin-color racism is practiced more by people (Thais, in this instance), of whom do not possess the "ability" to see, beyond the tips of their noses". Here's a new flash to consider: I couldn't care less about a certain level of Thai people disliking me, especially on the basis of my skin-color.

I further have information from Thais, the many "white" farangs (Brits & Yanks in particular) spend considerable bar-stool time bad-mouthing blacks, as a means of ingratiating (ass-kissing) themselves with Thai bar-girls. But that's a different topic of discussion, for a different thread, although be it a contributing factor to the Thai penchant toward the Negro-Phobia syndrome. Again, that's not my bigoted "ball & chain" to drag around in life.

Meanwhile, back @ the ranch: As a black man, I truly love Thailand, but I also consider it a compliment for the average Asian person (Thais included) to completely ignore my existence, and appreciate them minding their own business. The only thing a Thai (both genders) has ever done for me, is to provide a paid-for service, and to "sponge" as much of my money, as I will allow them to get their hands-on. There's definitely no love lost, on my part, for sure. Capiche?

Now, any black person, anywhere on this planet, who does not think "accordingly" so, is a bloody fool, and deserves to be a victim of racial bigotry and prejudice. I like myself, just fine. Cheerscoffee1.gif

In addition, to dispel any notion that I have a bad attitude toward Thais, I do not. I am courteous, polite and respectful to all Thai people, that I encounter, even toward those Thais who deliver those very "subtle", smiling-faced insults. However, I will not kiss any Thai body's butt, in order to get along, then pay them for the privilege of having done so. Right string, but wrong YOYwai.gif, here. Nostaroviacoffee1.gif

I think the mother played the black card rather than call him out for the fantastically flamboyant fuchsia shirt and be labeled fashion insensitive !! That shirt should not be allowed to marry into the family!!!

Perhaps the arrested friend was wearing a similar hot pink ensemble and that's the real reason the police took him off the streets

Africans ~ stand-out like sore thumbs, on the streets of Asia. If the cops are looking for a single black paedophile, then they need not work too hard @ it. 100 local Thais (at least) will readily report his whereabouts. One the other-hand, It's the boatload of "white" paedophiles (named Ron or otherwise) that present the police with their greatest "working" challenges.wai.gif

The only real racial bias against foreigners ive encountered here is predicated more on a perception that certain behaviours are associated with men from the middle east and india and how they interact with the girls in the bars sometimes.

Yes there are indeed cultural differences. However, this is Thailand and it is the responsibility of the African visitors just as it is for others to adapt to the local Thai customs. If Africans wish to gather and shout amongst themselves they are no different than the Australians or Russians or Norwegians or Chinese etc. In any case, they would be treated the same way the loud foreigners who kept trespassing to drink their Leo beers on our condo deck chairs: The sprinklers were turned on. They didn't come back. I had suggested hot oil or tear gas, but no one listened to me. One chap had the nerve to call me cruel.

Sterotype of any one being intimidated by blacks..

Your basic weak - timid - person - mostly women are afraid of black people.. If you are scared of black people in Thailand - you're real loser..

This black guy arrested - was arrested for no other reason than looking like an undesirable person, lurking around for a bargain..

Anyway - sometimes a random stop - you stop an innocent black/white/Asian person..

He should have had his passport. Heard he did not.. It was not a race issue!
