January 26, 201610 yr Hello and good day to you, My pregnant Farang wife is now overdue and our Doctor at the Chiang Mai Ram Hospital has said we must wait one more week before we can have the baby. This will mean that my wife will be delivering the baby on our visa expire date and we will need to overstay for a while before the baby and mother are fit to travel (maybe one month). Additionally, we will need to wait for around three weeks to obtain the newborn passport from our home country, before we can leave the Kingdom. Our tourist visa expires on the 3rd of February and it is likely that we will not be able to get to the immigraci office before the expiring date. Can someone please advise the best course of action? Can we obtain an extension of our tourist visa even after it expires? In advance, many thanks and respect for your assistance.
January 26, 201610 yr A letter from the hospital Doctor which certifies your wife as being unable to travel will be required to obtain a medical extension of stay (max 90 days) for her from immigration. ( The hospital patient services people should know what is required) Failure to seek an extension will result in overstay fines of 500 Bht/Day so best to seek an extension(s) before the visa(s) expire. Retrospective extensions are normally granted. You may or may not be able to get an extension to "care" for your wife. If not you will have to obtain another tourist visa from a nearby country. As a matter of interest why did you travel when she was in such an advanced stage of pregnancy ? Edited January 26, 201610 yr by sunnyjim5
January 26, 201610 yr Author Thanks for the reply, To clarify, even if our tourist visa is expired, the letter will cover her for up to 90 days? And although she has just had a baby and is unable to travel, I as her husband may not be able to stay and care for her? We have been here in Thailand for a few months and had always planned to have the baby before our final extension. As Murphy would have it, she is over due by 10 days and this falls right on the 60 day expiration

The letter is given in support of an application made to immigration, for an extension of stay based on medical necessity. The only means of extending her and your(?) stay is to apply for an extension of stay (prior to the expiration of your current permission to stay ? 3rd Feb) with the hospital letter at the immigration office. January 26, 201610 yr She could stay but they might not allow you to stay, have you thought about that situation (although it is not likely, you have to cover all the bases).
January 27, 201610 yr You need to obtain the hospital letter and apply for extensions before your current stay expires. Other wise fines of 500 Baht a day will be given. You might or might not be given an extension as carer. If not you need to do a border run or get a Visa.
