BANGKOK: -- The Commerce Ministry is now holding a Blue-Flag Fair in Bangkok to help reduce the cost of living.

The Blue-Flag Fair, the first of its kind this year, is being held at the Impact Exhibition and Convention Center in Muang Thong Thani on the outskirt of Bangkok from January 27-31.

The fair was officially opened by assistant to the Commerce Minister Mr Winichai Chamchang yesterday.

The five-day fair is aimed to help reduce burden on people’s high cost of living.

It offers visitors various kinds of essential consumer products, farm products and OTOP products at prices 20-40 percent below the market.

The fair offers a special price for an item on each day.

Yesterday sugar was sold at 17 baht per kilogram from the normal price of 23.5 baht per kilogram.

Special offer will be on cooking oils today.

Palm oil price will be down to 29 baht per bottle from 42 baht per bottle while soybean oil will be sold at 30 baht per bottle from the normal price of 55 baht per bottle.

On Friday, visitors will be able to buy jasmine rice from the fair at 129 baht per rice sack, down from 245 baht per sack.

On Saturday, a pack of 30 eggs will be sold at 75 baht, down from the normal price of 110 baht.

Sugar and palm oil - the core of Thai diet? I bet the savings now will add up to medical bills later on :(

Good. And people can pay transportation costs five times to get there and back home. They'll still come out ahead right?

There is a recurring fantasy in Thailand that the government can lower the cost of living by manipulating food prices.

Regarding this fair, what is the cost?
