Internet, EPL and projectors for open air Thai restaurant

Mrs NL's new restaurant is going great guns and she wants to tap into the local footie watching crowd. I have had TRUE recommended by one customer but another advised that they have different packages for commercial establishments. Anyone with a bar/restaurant who can advise?

Who carries the EPL and most other European football matches as part of their package? There's a large-ish German expat community nearby so maybe the Bundesliga would be a second pick to EPL if they come out with their wives. You know, cheap, cold Archa for the guys and somtam for the ladies.

Rather than fork out upwards of 25k baht for a huge flat screen, making it kamoy proof and worrying about the thing being lifted at night, I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation on those projectors that I have seen at some large restaurants? There's a large, flat white wall available to use as the screen that is shaded from external lighting. I could put a couple of smaller, owner-removable/storable LCD's for the outer parts of the restaurant if the crowd warrants.

Thanks!

This one is supposed to be reasonable in quality and price.. A very good projector can cost 60-129k baht.

I think the guy has a test room for you to check out the quality.. There are also YouTube videos. One outside in a parking lot with a huge projection onto the wall.

You have to test the projector where you would show the movie when it is brightest "sunny day" this way you know how it will work in practice.

The TVs can be put on stands that could be rolled out and bricks or sandbags to provide anchors. At close time, roll them into a secure location.

But dont you trust an indoor, mounted /security bars solution?

BeIn Sports won the rights to Premier League for three seasons starting with the 2016/2017 season.

Not clear yet how they are going to exercise those rights. They may resell to one existing provider, or perhaps package them up like they do in the UK.

They currently broadcast one channel on True.

You're going to have people coming in asking to see your commercial license if you show the EPL in a business.

One thing's for sure, if you don't have a commercial license which at the moment tends to be based on the size and number of TV's then you're going to be in for a shock one day as someone will come to check, this of course depends on where you are in the country.

Like Chicog said everything's changing for the EPL at the end of this season so it will be interesting to see what happens with the new rights holder and how they handle the situation. I have no doubt that they will make up their own set of rules to suit themselves. How they enforce these rules is going to be the interesting part.

Thanks for the info on the projectors. The couple I have seen have been in open air Thai restaurants that have a lot of street lighting to contend with and appear washed out. The street lighting at Mrs NL's restaurant is much lower so maybe a cheaper projector will suffice? Thanks for the links.

Making the flat screens 'portable' would work for any additional viewers but I reckon those will be around 40" and only augment the projected 'big screen'. I think anything larger than a 40" risks damage if moved twice a day. I have absolutely no confidence in any kamoy bars or security cages. They are a deterrent only and determined thieves will prevail. The storage room security will need to be beefed up to make it as time-consuming as possible to break into. A decent security system with ip cam will be a good investment too.

The EPL gravy train seems a bit of a lottery as to who will broadcast (or rebroadcast) it. We will ask at a few local restaurants that do have EPL and other games and see if they are dodging the licensing bullet (or not). Suffice to say that any required commercial licensing will be in place so it is not up for discussion here.

The restaurant is in the Pattaya 'dark side' BTW.

Thanks!

You've reminded me that CTH went around telling bars that the fee was based on the number of TVs and their size.

That may change of course.

Enforcement by the (then) licensee? I can see where so many restaurants and bars all over Thailand managed to keep broadcasting regardless... and CTH went tits up.
