PARIS: -- Moscow is known for its harsh winters, and for more and more people there’s no break from the freezing cold.

Homelessness is on the rise in the capital as the Russian economy suffers from the falling price of oil, its main export.

Some charities estimate there are now more than 100,000 people living rough in Moscow.

“Many people end up freezing to death in their sleep. I know many who have died,” said 29-year-old Vera. “Me, I’m cold and hungry, as always.”

More than two million Russians fell into poverty last year, as government spending cuts and inflation squeezed household income.

To escape the cold, some choose to go underground — into the city’s sewers. Sky News met with about half a dozen men living packed together in a claustrophobic cave. Huddled against sewage pipes, they try to keep warm until the next day.

13% of America is on food stamps. The difference between the USA and Russia is in America their getting food stamps and are able to buy food, in Russia their starving is sewers.

In Russia, even with money sometimes it's hard to find decent food to buy. In the US food stamp allotments are generous and stores are loaded with anything you could want.

In the USA, there are families, who's parents and grandparents have been on welfare, their whole lives. So there is nothing to push these people to find a job. About 15 years ago, Canada reduced the amount paid to welfare people. The next month the amount of people on welfare

went down by 20 + percent. These people went back to work !

Sky news propaganda. of course we have homeless people and of course they died sometimes of cold, sometimes of vodka etc... Only I think no more than in previous years. Yes prices go up in Russia (imported food a lot, local food maybe 15-20%) but not due to sanctions mostly due to oil prices. But I would not say if it increases homeless persons. Mostly people loose their houses because they drink too much, sometimes according to divorcing etc but anyway I hardly can imagine how sober homeless person may die of cold. Hit a shop window and sit in jail for 3-6 months)

I remember coming in to Khabarovsk station on the night train from Vladivostok in 1994 and seeing people trying to sleep/ keep warm on the overhead pipes that run the central heating in Russia. They had torn away the insulation and discarded is to give them warmth from the pipes that supplied those who had apartments. The Russian version is to put pipes above ground as they are easier to maintain/repair than having to dig into frozen ground in winter to fix pipes that have broken due to the frozen ground.I do need to check, and will do, but I don't think that they run hot water pipes underground.

Governments can't afford to support their people. People have to support the government.

Do you know that the UK's national debt is higher than that of the US as a percentage of GDP? LINK The UK is in danger because it doesn't have the economic engine or the natural resources in and on the ground that the US has. It doesn't have the technology.

How is Europe going to fund the food, housing and medical care for its people not to mention the hordes of recent invaders who are coming for the benefits?

The dole money will get reduced when the government goes broke.

For years I've heard Brits talk about the debt of the US all while they didn't notice that theirs was skyrocketing.

Look at the link above and see how many highly indebted nations are in Europe and/or have socialism. They simply can't afford it. It will crash.
