PM Prayut affirmed intention to see new draft charter pass public referendum

BANGKOK, 3 February 2016 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has affirmed his intention to see the new draft charter passed in the public referendum.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha said that although he may disapprove, criticism over the draft constitution is a basic rights of the people. He said that he has not reviewed any suggestions from the Constitution Drafting Commission but he is glad that the new draft constitution was completed and released to the public.

The Premier added that he wants the latest draft charter to pass the public referendum as planned. He went on to say that, if the draft charter fails to receive public endorsement, a contingency plan has been prepared.

When asked what could delay the planned general election, the Prime Minister said that it could be the draft constitution’s failure to secure the people’s support or political conflicts.

Even if it takes 20 more years of staying in power!

"When asked what could delay the planned general election, the Prime Minister said that it could be the draft constitutions failure to secure the peoples support or political conflicts."

So the PM is playing the good guy, he supposedly wants the planned election to go ahead but if the election doesnt happen then the public, media etc will be to blame. He knows the new charter will not be accepted but it will legitimize his staying in power.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha said that although he may disapprove, criticism over the draft constitution is a basic rights of the people.

"basic rights" is not his strong point...

It's always dangerous to take a "news" article from NNT and subject it to logical analysis, but let's give it a go anyway.

"Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha said that although he may disapprove, criticism over the draft constitution is a basic rights of the people. He said that he has not reviewed any suggestions from the Constitution Drafting Commission but he is glad that the new draft constitution was completed and released to the public."

The PM has "not reviewed any suggestions" from the CDC.

The draft has been released.

The PM says he wants the Charter to pass a referendum.

It would be fair to ask at this point, "Has the PM read the Charter, or been briefed on its contents, and does the PM have any idea of what is actually in the Charter?"

There are many uncertainties concerning the PM's knowledge and competencies. One thing is for certain, however, and that is we will not get many answers from NNT. As for Thai "journalists" in general, they've been warned that there is a fine line between criticism and bias. Now they have to decide if they want to find that line, or go home each night to be with their families.

Passing the new draft constitution is a weapon he is holding on the people to pass his referendum. He can not lose by keep approving new referendum because that way he can stay in power till hell freezes over. He does not want it to pass so he can say he wants peace in Thailand but has not improved any thing in two years. Just trying to make a name for himself!

"if the draft charter fails to receive public endorsement, a contingency plan has been prepared."

"Deputy Prime Minister Wisanu Krea-ngarm said Wednesday that there is no Plan B in case the draft constitution fails to be endorsed in the referendum....He, however, admitted that he had no idea what Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha had in his mind but he was sure that the prime minister would come up with a solution anyway." 2016-01-28

Classic PLAN B !

But it will be for the NCPO to know and the Thai people to be told.

The country is going downhill and the elites are hurting and they want the election next year. Prayuth has nothing to do with it. THey put him the there and they decide when he should exit.

Since the general election is postponed until end of 2017, there might still be ample time to scrap this piece of junk and start all over. Maybe with some more democratic elements to it, and it might just pass with flying colors.

But I guess that's not the idea here.

The last link, and the video of the PM's press conference embedded there, is a must see, even if you do not speak Thai.
