Different approaches to keeping laptop cool....

I recently had a problem with Acer v3 471g laptop (i5 3230M 2.6Ghz, 12gb RAM, SSD). It would suddenly shut off without warning or explanation. I could turn it back on and it would work most times....or turn off right when windows started. Turns out the internal fan stopped working which was causing the processor to overheat. That causes an auto shutdown to protect processor from any permanent damage.

So I took it to the shop and had a friend clean out the dust and oiled the fan a bit. I did not get to inspect the thermal paste or anything else. Anyway, the fan is still mostly not working. It came on once for about an hour and then quit. After several google searches, I managed to get the laptop to work again without the internal fan running by:

- Underclocking the processor from 100% to 80% max capacity (this also is supposed to disable Intel Turbo Boost)

- using an external table fan nearby.

I seem to be able to keep the internal CPU temp to under 60 °C with a x265 movie running (PotPlayer), firefox with a couple of tabs, and couple of other programs running. The underclocking has been a savior for now.

Not so sure about the laptop cooling pads, but I have seen laptop vacuum air extracting fan coolers that suck the hot air out of the outlet. If it works properly, it would be much more effective than using any external fan.

Has anyone here actually used one? Where I could get one of these in thailand?

Any ideas as to how much internal fan is going to cost for acer v3 471g?

DELL is the answer. I never understood how people can even have a look at an ACER?

Why don't you buy a mini fridge for your baby?

To answer your question: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/acer-laptop-fan

Please get your notebook to an Advice repair shop. They seem to be the best placers to get the parts and such stuff done.

Or please have a look here: http://www.amazon.com/Cooling-V3-471g-V3-531g-V3-551g-V3-571g/dp/B00JCO46K0

P.S./ Is your search machine overheated?

Internal laptop fans are cheap...you pay more for the labor to have it replaced. Just take a snapshot of the laptop and go to any computer shop for an estimate...it should be very reasonable.

Here's a short youtube video on disassembly...right at the end you see the fan and heat sink assembly removal. Unfortunately, your model seems to be one of the more complicated ones to get to the fan assembly. Now I'm sure it seems complicated to most people but to a computer shop that does this stuff all day, everyday it's easy. Just hope you get a shop that worked on your model before and knows the proper sequence of removal of various parts versus just unscrewing and pulling on stuff hoping to get it apart.

I would prefer to source the part locally (within thailand or possibly Malaysia) in case I have an issue with the new fan.

Not sure what you mean by 'search machine'. But according to OpenHardwareMonitor, the laptop seems to shut off after the CPU temp avg 72 °C or so. No warning, just immediate/complete power cut as if you held the power button for several seconds.. The underclocking has helped a lot as well as using an external fan.

Why don't you just get a new fan?

.....

One of my friends who has a repair shop said that he went to Acer repair center in Hat Yai and they said they wouldn't sell the part individually. You must take the laptop there in full.....and it would costs 15-2500 baht to fix.

I will try their spare parts number tomorrow or saturday (the main number for parts) to see if I can get the part. I find it hard to believe that a 3 year old laptop they do not have (or are unwilling to sell) the disposable part for.

Interestingly enough, the internal fan came back on again. Something about leaving the laptop on the external fan with reverse suction (the back side of the fan) seemed to get it working.

post-109486-0-44619200-1454583724_thumb.

Not sure how long it will last. The first time it came back on for an hour. But now it has been on for the whole day. I have not tried to restart the laptop, sleep, or shut it down yet to see if the fan will start back on.

To be honest, if your laptop is outside the warranty, or as your friend has already opened the case and tried to fix the fan, i wouldn't really worry about the fan being the specific spare part number from Acer. These fans are pretty generic, like RAM and HD's/SSD's.

Out with the old, in with the new and give it a run........................ wink.png

How would I (or anyone) be able to know which fan for another brand would be compatible? Ram is accessible. The fan is not so accessible to verify it would fit.

OP, please get the machine to an "Advice repair shop" and I'm certain they'll have the right parts and do a good job. And you'll have warranty on it.

Bad luck, usually Acer are ok.

An external fan works very well, which you see by checking cpu temperature etc. You can get triple fans as well.

Why anyone thinks a DELL is better I have absolutely no idea. They are a pain with non standardised fittings. (In my personal opinion)

2000 baht + to repair an internal fan! Not a chance unless they're trying to cheat you.

As others have said "go to an Advice computer shop". They seem to have proper technicians and fixed prices.

I was charged 1500 baht to have my Acer fan replaced. Ripped off or not, I don't know. All I knew was the computer shop was local and the technician lived in my village and would stand by the 12 month warranty.

My DELL Inspiron 1440 must be eight by now. Got Windows 10 Pro and MS Office 2016, plus some other good ones on it.

It runs like a Swiss clockwork. I had it cleaned once, it never left me alone. Once I dropped it, but nothing broke. Please try that with an Acer...

I've seen too many Acers that run even hotter as hell. The last was only one year old and always shut down, because of it.

A DELL comes with a three year warranty. plus a great online support.

Now please tell me where the ACERS are?.

Typing this on an ACER Travelmate 6292. Tried DELL once, communications were so lousy I reversed the transaction. It may be the answer for you. I'd sooner eat fish eyes than deal with that mob of retards again.

I have a 16gb DDR3 3.8ghz i7 extreme ed chip laptop with three fans and I always wish to provide cooling, though not sure I need it always. I bought a large Coolermaster extruded aluminum 17.5" Notepal (years ago). It also has three fans and remains cool to the touch in most environments. It has 2 USB plugs in the back. However, instead of running the coolermaster to latptop by USB I use an old iphone/ipad usb charger and plug the coolermaster directly into the outlet. Thus there is no trade off drawing power from the PC.

I then bought an cheap Strong Cool over fan outlet blower (as pictured in this op) and instead of plugging that into the laptop, I route it to the coolermaster port. Thus all cooling is independent of laptop. I fashioned a cardboard platform to use this desktop replacement or any other in bed.

I am unsure what needed to be oiled as these should be sealed and not all fans are equal in any event. Oil is death to such places. Thus frequent air blowing as I do would not help if there was oil in the place you wanted clean. It would become gum.

Good luck.

I have a stand that sits under my laptop. It has an in-built fan that extracts heat from the laptop. It is powered from the laptop via a usb plug.

Cools the computer , and raises the laptop slightly off the table.

Works an absolute treat.......................................as my laptop is on constantly during the day.

Where did you buy the Strong Cool fan?

Aliexpress. A few pounds. Its pretty cheap. When it came I actually had to open it up because the inards moved in shipping. No problem, just plastic pieces. Open, seat, seal, screw, attach. Its a cheap little device for a few GBP. I think$3. And so it blows hot air from the cpu/cooler right out the back and is directional. happy. Retractable USB cord also. May have to finger tighten every so often when you hear lil rattle. I have now used for two years.

Look closely at the end view and see the spring clips left and right. Ensure they will fit over your exhaust ports or the fins in your exhaust port are thin enough to allow the cooler to bite. (Easy to modify on the cooler if not).

My internal fan was partially fixed when the repair cleaned out the dust and applied some new thermal paste to cpu. Also oiled up the fan a bit. But the heat was still leaving something to be desired. I ended up buying the Yuesong 6 from SuperCoolComputer for 500 baht EMS shipped. I've had it for almost 2 months now and it works well. Keeps the inside about 15-20 °C on full blast and the white noise isn't that much worse than a laptop internal fan when near full load.

One drawback is that it does not clamp to the laptop directly. So if you do not use a table, you must place a board, laptop pad, etc flat surface underneath so that the exhaust cooler detachable plate can rest on something. I still have a defunct cooling pad that I still use to keep the laptop elevated and off my lap when working with it.

Another thing is that the blue tabs at the bottom that the plate attaches to are kind of flimsy. Mine broke and it turns out that #6 3/8" phillips screws did the trick (You can get away with up to 3/4" length) They actually hold the plate in place much better than the original blue plastic tabs. All for the sum of 1 baht at the local hardware store.

I have lost a few laptops to heat..and a few more to spilled fluids. Then I started thinking. It appears much more appropriate to forget laptops altogether. The standard desktop PC tower is a snap to open and clean, is easily upgraded, and operates much cooler.

My laptop is stationary. It has a low battery life, so I attached two LCD TV's to it, (50in and 36in) and I run it full throttle 24/7...right below my air conditioner. My tower is coming next month. I use a remote keyboard/mousepad....and the laptop will be semi retired (possibly used for a backup). I don't see many people using laptops as they walk around...as IPads, Phones, and other devices are much more portable ...and have longer battery life.

Here is to the death of the laptop.

For comparison: a replacement fan is offered at Amazon for 6.99 USD (about 240 Baht).

With an "Acer tag: its about double the price.

EVERY laptop repair booth at the tukcom's etc. should be able to do the replacement and have/find such a part.

There are specialists in laptop repair/disassembly, just look out. Hard to miss.

A trivial job for them.

2500 Baht is a joke, turn away!

Where do you live?

The symptoms described sound very much like a bearing defect.

New fan needed.
