Producers ask to be paid at rubber buying centers

SATUN, 8 February 2016 (NNT) – Rubber planters in Satun are asking the government to pay them upfront, not through the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC).

Vice Governor of Satun Soradej Sundararjun said today the province has set up 22 rubber purchasing centers since January 25th to buy rubber from farmers affected by the falling price of the product. So far, he said these centers have bought rubber from a total of 635 producers. According to the regulation, the state can only buy 10 kilograms of rubber per rai from the planters.

According to his statement, the farmers have asked for the government to increase the quota and to pay them upfront instead of having them collect the money from the BAAC.

The rubber planters claimed that even if the government wired the money to their accounts, the process would still take 2-3 days.

I will tell my wife to pay tax upfront as well so the rubberfarmers can eat today. Not smart to plant ONLY rubbertree's since you can't eat those.

Until farmers receive their payment, the program is essentially a pledge scheme.

When the government takes possession of rubber, it should through its banks be obligated to pay in full immediately.

State-owned BAAC and Government Savings Bank have been funded for the payouts. Probably even making interest from the funds until paid out. And if it wired funds to a nonBAC/GSB account for a farmer, it can charged for the wire.

The total rubber buying program is roughly 2.3% of the crop. Can't say I blame the producers for wanting it to be expanded. And to be paid in cash. Not sure I would like a rubber check.

Can't say I blame after what happened to the rice farmers by the end of the PT scheme.

These farmers are not asked to be paid up front. They are asking to be paid on delivery, which is fair. The Noluck government had a terrible track record of late payments. Some farmers were not paid for 12-18 months. That is unacceptable. She nearly bankrupted the nation with her hair brained scheme. A lot of highway repair which should have been done years ago, is being done now, due to the lack of funding. Same goes for this scheme. It is positively idiotic and cowardly. But, if you are going to make a promise, keep it. So, I agree with the farmers being paid on delivery. Otherwise it is nothing more than a pledge from a government that cannot be counted upon for reliability.
