PM calls for clear digital economy plans to be drafted

Bangkok, 9 February 2016 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has called for each of the ministries of the cabinet to draft plans in line with the government’s 20 year Digital Economy strategy.

Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha has chaired a meeting of the commission established to transition the nation’s economy and society to the digital era at Government House. At the beginning of the meeting, the premier made known he wants all ministries of the government to outline clear plans based on the 12th National Economic and Social Development Board blueprint, which outlines a 20 year plan for national development. He asserted that the plans are needed to ensure that once general elections take place, the new government will be able to move forward with national reforms.

Among the meeting’s agendas was the presentation of a master plan for the development of a digital society and economy and a plan proposed by Electronic Government Agency Plc (EGA). Both adhere to the government’s 20 year plan, which is divided into 5 year phases.

The first phase of the plan utilizes proposals by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and Ministry of Education to create networking infrastructure. The Information Ministry is to set up 10 thousand high speed internet relays to give the public wider access to Free Wi-Fi. Relevant laws to implement the plan are to be concluded within this year.

So, why aren't they having a virtual meeting? They are all sitting in a stuffy room where they had to travel to attend. The table is crowded with papers and notebooks and their names are on folded paper in the center. Looks pretty 19th Century to me. coffee1.gif

The burgeoning ranks of subsistence farmers will be so pleased with their improved Wi-Fi connections.

Well it will give them something to do, now that they have been told not to plant their crops!

Saddam, Use to wear his Uniform in meetings also.

Have people noticed that when they have such meeting most seem to wear the same clothes, whether it's the silly silk shirts, black suits, civil service or army uniforms. I guess the PM sends out a dress code for everyone before the meeting. So funny !!!

You can have any digital economy plan you like, but it gets completely screwed up by the single-gateway.

Is there anyone under 70, who understands technology, who is actually advising the government - or are they just talking the talk.

A 20 year plan will assure that a new government will be unable to amend, add or delete Prayut's Digital Economy strategy.

A predefined digital strategy smothers innovation, resists digital evolution and is inflexible to the needs of a changing society.

Imagine such a plan in place 10 years ago. Today those strategies would be irrelevant.

A very cramped meeting room by the look of things.

Part of an ' economy drive ' to prove money doesn't get wasted on lavish meetings ?

cramped with people who don't know very much about IT.

if he really wants a "clear digital economy" plan then it's quite easy:

step 1: don't create a single gateway

step 2: don't limit speech and access online

step 3: don't keep foreign innovators and digital nomads out with arcane visa policies

that doesn't even require the government to do anything! and not only are they free, but they require less investment by the government, saving money on building a ridiculous single gateway and trying to monitor all internet traffic! not only that, they'd bring in FDI by creating visa classes like Singapore and Korea have which allow young people who want to build startups to do so here - along with foreign companies who want to set up a base here but find that it's far more cost effective and less worrisome to set up shop in a neighboring country!
