NRSA's Kamnoon worried about balance between people and politicians under new charter

BANGKOK, 9 February 2016 (NNT) – The spokesman of the National Reform Steering Assembly is worried that there may be an imbalance between the place of the people and role of politicians under the proposed new charter.

At the sitting to deliberate suggestions for the Constitution Drafting Commission on Monday, NRSA spokesman Kamnoon Sidhisamarn said that he has found the issue of the election has been the most criticized topic because the CDC makes Thailand the first country in the world to use only one ballot for the election of both constituency and party-list members of parliament.

Under this proposed system, the total vote of each constituency will be used in the calculation of the number of party-list MPs.

Mr. Kamnoon stated that such an approach is equivalent to limiting people’s right to vote and making it less feasible for small political parties to contest the election.

He also questioned the election of the prime minister. The CDC has recommended that the names of the candidates be revealed before the election takes place, while casting doubt on how effective the new charter would be in restoring peace and successful national reform, because it appears to show an imbalance between the power of the people and the will of the politicians.

Complete hogwash, what on earth is this man going on about, is he like a few TVF members just talking for the sake of talking

The whole party list concept should be completely eliminated because all it does is breed corruption.

I thought the main idea of this charter was to eliminate corruption. No?

People vs politicians? Big elephant in the room is the military, in case no one noticed.

The military is and always has been Mr Big, politicians can distribute the peanuts, the banana's belong to the boys in green

Why not: "power of representatives elected by the people vs appointed people"?

The whole party list concept should be completely eliminated because all it does is breed corruption.

I fail to see how a party list where no votes are being discarded leads to more corruption. Are you claiming constituency candidates do not engage in corruption ?

Personally I think they should ditch the whole constituency and have a party list election only. Simple, straightforward and being used in other countries quite successfully.

Oh I thought the main idea of this charter was to return Thailand to democracy.

Something the elitists never seem to understand - the will of the politicians derives from the power of the people.

At least in a democratic society.
