BANGKOK: -- Business sector’s confidence index for the month of January dropped to 48.5 points from last December’s 49.9 points reflecting slump in production, sale and export in contrast with increasing operating costs, said Ms Somsajee Sikasamat, director of Office of Statistics and Information of the Bank of Thailand, on Tuesday.

However, she pointed out that confidence index of the business sector in the next three months is likely to increase to about 54.1 points compared to 52.3 points for the same period last year due to increased investments, improved employment situation and financial situation as well as improved performance of business operators.

The Office of Statistics and Information conducted a survey of the opinions of 1,010 business operators across the country through questionaires. 60 percent of the questionnaires were returned.

The Office’s confidence index of business sector is different from the consumers’ confidence index carried out by the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the confidence index of the industrial sector conducted by the Federation of Thai Industries.

60% of the questionnaires were returned, what happened to the other 40%?

Perhaps the companies were to busy working, or perhaps had gone bust and closed down.

When I read the title I immediately thought that BSI stood for Bull S**t Index - now why did I think that................whistling.gif

Every Thai prognosticator is a cockeyed optimist. The next quarter is always going to be better!

Wow Miss SS can nail future figures right down to 54.1% incredible. She better lay off of the government joy juice for a while.

The Business sector’s confidence index is actually the Business Sentiment Index. It was started in 1999.

The BSI above 50 indicates that business sentiment has improved and below 50 that has worsened.

Since the coup it has averaged about 47.5; not a good sign for the Thai economy.
