NBTC to conclude license dispute in Feb

BANGKOK, 11 February 2016 (NNT) - The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) will convene a meeting early next week to brainstorm ways to solve disputes between the broadcasting regulator and some digital TV operators.

NBTC Secretary-General, Takorn Tantasith disclosed that the commission would meet on February 16 to discuss solutions to the conflict. He affirmed that the NBTC would resolve the problem within this month.

At least five TV channel operators have filed lawsuits with the Central Administrative Court against the broadcasting committee of the NBTC for its alleged breach of duty and delayed transition from terrestrial-based broadcasting to the new digital system. The broadcasting regulator must deliver an action plan by the end of this month.

Other challenges facing the NBTC include delays in the third installment of auction fees due on May 24, the extension of the license period from May 2014 to May 2015, and plans by five digital TV operators to return their licenses to the commission.
