I'm about to start applying for Citizenship. I'd like to hear from anyone that has got it from outside of Bangkok.

Any other information as to the first things to do would be most helpful.

I have had my Yellow Book for many years. Have paid tax for 3 years on 40k + baht. Married to a Thai for over 15 years.

Speak and read Thai.

A possible problem could be that I have a house in Khon Kaen but my tabien baan is in Lopburi.

Cheers

I am also interested in people's feedbacks that have applied from the provinces.

I am a PR and still have to wait 4 years before I can apply.

When I checked with Special branch in Chiang Mai a couple of years ago. They had hundreds of applications on file, but according to the officer no one had been granted citizenship for many years.

Would be interested to know if that has changed since the army has took over as they have improved the process.

Just for your info,

It has been mentioned (arkady) that you are better off moving your Tabien Baan to Bangkok as they are much better able to deal with your application and you don't have to go through so many departments to get approved. I had a look at the flow chart for getting citizenship and people in the provinces have to go through a number of additional steps (still has to go through Bangkok) each complicating the process.

Thanks ThaiJames,

I thought I had heard something to that effect that it was harder in the provinces. As I do't live in Bangkok, I have n idea how I would get my tabien baan moved there, do you?

If you could find a friend or a member of you wife's family that has a tambien ban for Bangkok that would allow you to get a yellow book for their home would be the only way to get it done.

Would the new yellow book then need to be held for the appropriate time or is the criteria that a continuation is accepted?

There is no requirement for a person to live in the same residence for the entire time. The old yellow book or copies of it would be enough.

This is a very interesting topic for me because I am thinking about doing the process too.

I have lived in Udon Thani for nearly 30 years and want to get citizenship before I retire in 9 years.

Somewhere in early 2009 I started the process for the application of Thai Citizenship in the province. The police officer at the local police station was not familiar with the procedures. On our request he went to SB in Bangkok to obtain information. The officer came back to me and advised me to get the process done by SB in Bangkok as they have a dedicated and experienced department to handle Thai Citizenship application. To make use of this department I had to have my yellow Tabien Baan registered on an address in Bangkok. I had it done and everything went perfect.

Thanks for sharing this!

So now, I'm wondering if anyone has ever gone through the process from outside Bangkok. I imagine Lopburi have a Special Branch but will have to make inquiries.

You're welcome.

Just an idea provided you can read towns/ cities in Thai. You might want to go to the Royal Gazette website and download some previous citizenship announcements.

The last one was from 28 January 2016. I checked it out for you. Out of 142 addresses, 10 were in the provinces. 5 in Samut Prakan, 1 in Samut Songkhram, 1 in Chonburi, 1 in Trat, 1 in Nakhon Pathom and 1 in Chiang Mai.

To be safe, go to your current khet and tell them you are moving to a new tabieen baan. They will provide you with the forms. You'll need the house master with you.

Then take these forms to the new khet - and they'll enter you in. With the new house master of course.

Technically with the blue book (for Thai citizens) you should just be able to turn up at the new khet and be transferred there. But the above process is available and might be worthwhile doing just in case the BKK khet send you back to the provinces!

Thanks for the heads up! Now to find someone to put me on their bangkok Tabien bahn! Does it have to be a relative?

I also thought that they might visit the said address to check if I actually live there. I'll try the Lopburi Special Branch first and see what they have to say.
