PHUKET: Exasperated by the never-ending battle over land ownership rights with the sea gypsy community in Rawai, some land owners involved have offered to sell their plots to the government in order to resolve the dispute.

Weerachai Tantiwattanawalop, who claims to own five rai of land currently occupied by the sea gypsies, said he and other land owners were planning on submitting a letter to Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, asking the government to step in and buy their land, developing it as needed for the sea gypsy community.

Mr Weerachai refuted reports that the land owners were demanding the government pay 500 million baht for a total of 19 rai.

“There has been a misunderstanding about the proposed price of the land. It was initially our intention to develop the land by building a resort, which would have a total estimated value of 500mn baht once complete. However, if the government decides to buy our land, we will let them assess the value of the plots, and then we can talk about it,” said Mr Weerachai.

No doubt the holders of dodgy land titles will be delighted to sell off at a very handsome profit ...

Exactly.

That leaves millions of Thai's, all over Thailand, paying for the corrupt practices that take place on Phuket.

Government would do well to pay peanuts to these people and then invest to turn it into a Moken Sea Gypsy Village tourist attraction. As poster Fiddlehead commented on a different thread, there are interesting crafts, souvenirs, seafood, lots of interesting history to these people. Make it a walking area.

Great Idea, but not at over USD 1,000,000 a RAI..................

Well.....We all know everything is for sale. The question is the price. When you consider

we are not even really sure who owns the land. One farmers family claims her great

grandfather allowed the sea gypsies to stay on his land in return for work on his coconut

plantation. Some say the sea gypsies have attained squatters rights. Maybe, maybe not.

After all they were paying a kind of rent in working on the coconut plantation. Also sea

gypsies are by definition gypsies and would not stay in one place for the 10 years needed

to attain squatters rights. Then there is the possibility of some people attaining the land

by bribing officials. We shall see what comes to pass. It may be better for those claiming

ownership to take a settlement rather than a court ruling against them.

Define "peanuts."

If the Land Office guy is in on the "investment" (crime) how much did it cost him to print up a dodgy Chanote title?

They all get paid for doing nothing more than him pressing "print" on a computer, and the Thai people have been defrauded by the Baron World Trade Company.

This case needs to be properly investigated.

"but in Thailand, who has the ethics and knowledge to do that?" - no one.

Disgraceful, isn't it?
