Tax on personal items when moving to Thailand?

Featured Replies

Hi, at last I have decided to spend all my time in Thailand instead of 6 or 7 months each year. My question is I want to bring a few things like my Juicing machine which is only a few months old and cost £240.00. Will I have to pay duty tax on this when I bring it into Thailand??

In a word, yes and probably more than it is worth. If you had lots of high value items you could use a shipping company and they would negotiate customs for you and minimise the duty. Thai customs are jobsworths and as corrupt as any other public service in Thailand. I just got stung. I sent the papers for my wife's visa application and stupidly put a value of £25 to cover the cost of replacement documents in case they got lost, net result, wifey gets a 600b customs bill before DHL would release the package

There are rules and then there are rules. The official rules says that you are permitted to import 1 electric items of each. Nobody need to know how old these items are. Then there are Thai Custom Officers rules. They can do what they want. But also it depends on what kind of Visa to entre on. Officially it is only returning Thai citizens, been out of Thailand for a year or more, people with work permit and Diplomats who are allowed to import without paying any tax, but again then conditions must be met before they can. Get hold of a good agent/ moving company that are willing to help you and not only care about money. We did and didn't paid 1 Satang.

how are the goods getting to Thailand

The only big items are one computer, one juicing machine and I was going to fly them in when I come over

You will not pay anything when you bring them in with you.

Best if you can find some large suitcases that they will fit into and then just walk through the nothing to declare lane (been there done that).
