Baffling statistics fail to hide Thailand’s worrying gun crime problem

BANGKOK: -- IN January three people were shot and killed in Bangkok over what the Bangkok Post said was a, “long-standing dispute over parking.”

Two women and a male neighbor who had intervened in the argument were killed by Thossaporn Pitakwattananon. In another long-standing feud, according to the Bangkok Post, a gardener shot and killed a colleague at Thammasat University later in February.

Just this last weekend a reportedly “jealous lover” shot and killed his girlfriend in a Bangkok shopping mall, and immediately after the man shot himself in the head. A nine-year-old girl was also hit in the face by a stray bullet over the weekend.

These incidents happened just a few months following reports of Thailand’s high per capita gun murder rate,

Lot s of countries have this worrying trend happening, Australia has gun control , that hasn't stopped gun related crime and murder on a weekly basis , it possibly only slows down the effect, there is a high degree of knifings being used as a weapon of choice in OZ also, so , you eliminate one another comes along.....................

It's not about gun control.

Although many are quick to jump on that bandwagon and are missing the point.

It's about self-control and the childlike mentality that is a cancer on this nation: Losing Face.

Face is a serious concept across most of East Asia, but what Thai culture is missing that Japanese or Korean is not is honor and shame. Honor and shame normally serve as counterbalances to loss of face. In Thai culture, there appears only the nourishing of the self ego and without ingrained notions of honor (right from wrong) and shame, there is little to make anyone reconsider harming someone else - - irrespective of who was right and who was wrong.

In fact, we are talking about culture.

We have evidence that humans are able to live in much greater harmony than is found in Thailand. Random examples: Scandinavia, Japan, Korea, Singapore

We must identify why some societies fare much better than others.

Many issues in Thai culture and society that must be addressed.

Have you ever noticed that people here just cannot disagree? They do not know how to disagree and detach their ideas of disagreement with a particular concept or decision from the person or people involved. Hence 100 years of chaotic politics (among the most chaotic in the world).

They must address their cultural shortcomings which I imagine will be incredibly painful for them. Redefining the Thainess they are so permanently proud of.

Life is getting devalued by the day , fragile as life is , we as humans fail in basic human apathy the world over not just here,

knowledge of what we do to address the human faults that we all have and some can not control is really a sham on society as a whole,

how far have we come in 2016 when you look back, at past centuries, killing for jealousy , wanting some else running shoes, parking space, iPhone , wanting what your neighbour has, different material things , when you hear of such atrosities and how pathetic the perpertators are,

Whats really changed can some one please tell me as i really fear for the life and future of my children what type of world am i going to leave for them , when we can not fix such a simple thing and ban all guns,

or go the other way and give every one a gun, like Switzerland where every adult gets issued with a rifle and gets trained on how to use it,, they have the lowest gun related crime rate in the world.

Kids learn to build their own guns at technical schools, it's really plenty of homemade guns, can buy for a couple thousand bahts, there's nearly one in every house. Add this to very short tempered mentality and attitude to understand why this is hopeless
