Time to Outgrow Garment Manufacturing, Gov’t Advisor says

As the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) raises Cambodia’s profile as a member of one of the world’s largest trade zones, investors around the world are considering Cambodia as a gateway to the region and it should take advantage of this opportunity by diversifying its economic base, a senior government advisor said.

Mey Kalyan, senior advisor to the government’s Supreme National Economic Council, said it was time for Cambodia to outgrow its reliance on garment exports to a more diversified range of products for export. He said overreliance on garments would not allow for stable economic development.

“Supporting the industrial sector is the main priority for the government,” Mr. Kalyan said. “Step by step, Cambodia will have many light-manufacturers,” he said, referring to factories for electronics products and machinery.
