PHUKET: -- Police remained silent on dawn raids at a Phuket mayor’s home this morning where firearms were seized as 58 suspects arrested in an anti-crime blitz today were presented to the press this afternoon (Feb 18).

Pol Maj Gen Adis Ngamchitsuksri, Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), presented the 58 suspects along with more than 20,000 items seized in raids carried out by more than 300 officers islandwide from daybreak to noon.

Among those arrested were 28 jet-ski operators, facing charges of “breaking jet-ski regulations”, said Gen Adis.

“Of the 58 arrested, 14 were wanted on warrants,” he added.

The remainder comprised three arrested for breaking immigration law; four arrested for working as illegal guides; another four arrested on drug charges plus one man arrested for marijuana possession; four people charged over illegal cosmetics, food products and psychotropic drugs.

Among the items seized and presented to the press today were firearms ranging from pump-action shotguns to hunting rifles to semi-automatic handguns; as well as 38 bullets with loading magazines; counterfeit goods, cosmetics and illegal medicines, including fake Viagra and health products; and some marijuana.

The officers worked in teams of 11, comprising officers from the CIB, Tourist Police, Marine Police, Highway Police, Railway Police, Technology Crime Suppression Division, Economic Crime Suppression Division, Human Trafficking Crime Suppression Police and the Public Sector Anti Corruption Commission.

The raids targeted specified suspects and carried out with warrants, said Gen Adis.

“Phuket is a one of the most popular tourist destinations that generate a lot of income for the country,” Gen Adis said.

The long gun at the top of the OP picture is unusual and deadly. It's a 12ga shotgun, but with a fully rifled barrel and rifle sights. The first giveaway are the rifle sights, not usually found on a shotgun. The second giveaway is the rifle length barrel. It's designed to shoot only slugs, and in particular a sabot slug. It's a big game gun, accurate to about 200 yards/meters and really packs a wallop. Imagine a slug "bullet" the size of a 12ga barrel.

I have one of those but mine is a Remington. Don't know what that one is. I bought mine for fishing in Alaska where we very often encounter grizzly bears fishing in the same river we do. I've never been threatened by a grizzly and they are fascinating to watch, but the gun is just in case because they are unpredictable. It would knock even a big griz right onto its butt.

That's also an excellent elephant or tiger gun... sad.png

Cheers.

The fun part is at the end of the article:

However, at the press conference held at the Tourist Police headquarters in Phuket Town today, Gen Adis made no mention of CIB and CSD officers raiding the home of Srisoonthorn Mayor Worawut Songyos at 6:30am

Officers seized firearms found in the home, then moved to the home of his relative, Jirayut Songyod, and his house with a warrant.

The raids on the Songyos’ homes this morning follow Mayor Worawut last year filing a formal complaint in December 14 about overzealous police raiding homes of the Songyos family without a search warrant.

That raid, carried out by more than 20 officers, was aimed at arresting Padungsak Songyos on a charge of issuing a bad cheque

An instant classic!

You'd have to be pretty close for it to work on big bears and elephants! Although they'll all be found to be properly registered and the owners licenced........yesterday!

HOLY CRAP. I wonder how they will spin this, or will the cat be shoved back inside the bag.

Yes, this is quite an amazing seizure. This particular mayor has previously been in news after a police raid on his brother's home last December.

I had to google Srisoonthorn .... I see it's out by Cherngtalay ...

Yes. About 200 yards/meters. They are excellent in the forest or for defending yourself if needed.

All three of those guns appear to be appropriate for big game, where normally we see anti-personnel weapons. I'm concerned that they were intended for elephants or tigers.

That black gun looks like it could some damage !

Don't let the black gun fool you even though it looks "tacticool". It's also a shotgun. It can do lots of damage at close range but it isn't an "assault" weapon. We have a term for guns that are black and outfitted like that but I won't use it here.

They need to keep the Phuket tiger population in check. It is, after all, a tourist island.

Am I talking about the gun at the top and you the one at the bottom? If so I agree. The one I described is at the top with the wooden stocks.

Cheers.

I've owned many shotguns over the years. None looked like that black one! LOL

Is this a joke? On Bkk Sukhumvit are at least 4 street vendors selling all this stuff in the open for years on a stretch of 350 m. 2 of them are in a 10 m range of a temporary police checkpoint where big brass cops are handing out receipts for fines to tourists caught "littering".

do they ever record the serial numbers on seized items ( and find out they had been seized before ) ?

If these weapons were destroyed and seen to be destroyed as in the gun armistice of a few years ago in the UK serial numbers would not matter. But I guess this guns will be up for grabs in a few months time after being reallocated to another province. I would love that shooter in the middle with the sights but I don't need ammo ,I just like guns . Had a 6 shooter at school in the early '60s gave a pupil 2 Dinky toys for it and sold it in about '62 for 7/6.
