webfact
GLO to reduce lottery tickets after there are unsold ticketsBANGKOK: -- The Government Lottery Office may reduce the number of lottery tickets for each draw after many vendors have complained of unsold tickets.GLO director Maj-Gen Chalongrath Nark-arthit said Thursday that the office would evaluate the result of advance bookings of lottery tickets on Thursday whether the number of lotteries booked has dropped or not.If the number of tickets booked in advance has dropped, it means that only the real retailers made the bookings while the speculators have just gone away. The GlO has recently increased the number of lottery tickets to 120 million tickets or 60 million pairs per draw. The GLO director said if advance bookings have dropped, he would recommend the board to reduce the number of lotteries for each draw to match with the actual demand of consumers.26 million tickets for March 1 draw were made available for advance bookings. He explained that the sale of lotteries usually drops during the Songkran festival in mid-April and May because the purchasing power of the people tend to drop during the period. He attributed the unsold tickets for the last draw to the retailers’ failure to rush selling their tickets during the initial stage.Source: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/content/151514 -- Thai PBS 2016-02-

Toknarok
Funnily enough in times of economic hardship sales of lottery tickets increase slightly (according to a survey in the USA). http://taxfoundation.org/blog/does-lottery-revenue-rise-or-fall-during-economic-hardship

Lingba
why don't they just set up vending machines in convenience stores and have people come in and choose what they want...no extra tickets printed and wasted.
Nbarch
why don't they just set up vending machines in convenience stores and have people come in and choose what they want...no extra tickets printed and wasted. Because this was the logical solution to the initial problem of overpriced lottery tickets and the system used in most countries. Obviously you are falang and no understand! Anyway everybody is Happy and the lottery is still only 80baht (but it had risen to 90baht in the last market I visited)
SABloke
why don't they just set up vending machines in convenience stores and have people come in and choose what they want...no extra tickets printed and wasted. Because the lottery prize is not a shared pool like in some places. You get paid the value of your ticket so if everyone chose the winning number there wouldn't be enough money to pay out everyone. Also the chance of winning the 1st prize is 50 times greater than in a country where numbers are chosen.

Anyway everybody is Happy and the lottery is still only 80baht (but it had risen to 90baht in the last market I visited) So the price has now risen to 90 baht in places and everyone is still happy ? I find that rather hard to believe I'm afraid, the many Thais I know simply refuse to pay anymore than 80 baht, the usual suspects that increase the price usually do so on the back of claiming that running around on a motorbike increases their cost,a simple solution to that is not to sell them on the move. The whole lottery system is a joke per se.

What do you think this whole changes in system and fixing prices was designed fo? I believed from the start it was to do just that, and get rid of the poor and handicapped selling them and putting it in the hands of the chains and rich with those self service machines. teelac5
"The GlO has recently increased the number of lottery tickets to 120 million tickets or 60 million pairs per draw." so each draw could possibly generate 4.8 Billion baht yet the jackpot is a measly 6 Million, there's no rollover and no accounting at all for the excess funds. You need to be insane to play this lottery, it's clearly just lining some rich groups pockets and no-one says squat.
callaway
What do they expect. The poor folks up here in Isaan are being raped. Interest charges up, taxes going through the roof and big increases soon. The last rice crop barely made a baht. The wife was saying she seen lottery tickets being sold for 70 baht the other day here in Surin. Will get worse before it gets better. Businesses closing every day here. The city is very quiet and Big C and Makro are even quiet compared to 6 months ago.
bark
So the amount of ticket sales drop, one time in 10 years and they hit the hold and reduce button !
tomacht8
The State Lottery Thai has a very poor profit ratio for players. Considering the stakes of all players, the distributed profit share is very low .
