To Kill A Mockingbird author Harper Lee dies

Harper Lee, the American novelist who wrote To Kill a Mocking Bird has died at the age of 89.

The book probed the racial injustice of segregation in the US state of Alabama..

It sold more than 40 million copies and was translated into 40 languages.

After publishing it in 1961 Harper Lee fled from public view and didn’t publish anything for another 50 years.

Then towards the end of her life a manuscript for the sequel to the book was discovered and released with the title Go set a watchman.

But there is heated debate about how much input Harper Lee, who was partly deaf and blind after a stroke in 2007, really had in its publication.

She died less than half a mile away from the house where she was born in in the town of Monroeville.

The nasty surprise was that the sequel novel, which wasn't discovered and published until recently, made the Atticus Finch character into more of a retrograde racist. Almost a Trump-like flip.

I thought that she was already long dead. I wonder if "To Kill a Mockingbird" supported her for her whole life. It was a great book, so it should have.

Yes, Truman Capote did a great job writing it for her, set her up for life.

Now that the manuscript for the 'other' Harper Lee novel has been revealed and published (under shady circumstances), it's even more obvious that she didn't write To Kill A Mockingbird.

I just finished reading Go Set a Watchman and I can say, with 99% certainty, that the authors of the two novels were not the same.

If you sell a million books in your lifetime, you can live reasonably well on the proceeds.

"Mockingbird" still sells a million per year! You can be sure that not only did she live well, she was a philanthropist too.

May she RIP. She was instrumental in bringing race relations to the forefront of a nation.
