retirement visa

Featured Replies

Hello,

I 56 year old man looking into retirement visa in Thailand. I want to retire thailand in the next 6 months with my wife, we live in greece.

I just chek if I am able to get a work permit on a retirement visa? I read that its not possible but want to ask on here to double chek.

Sorry for my bad english.

Thank you

Generally, no.

As it is not legal to work in Thailand while living there with an O-A visa or retirement extensions.

You might hear about exceptions, but again, the general answer is NO.

The simple answer is no.

yes.. the answer is no.. retirement is for no working....they consider 60 the cutt off point here... unless you have special standing.

ok i did not think so.

What exceptions exist? or do you need letter from god to be class as exception?

For all practical purposes a work permit cannot be obtained whilst on a retirement O/A visa or an extension of stay based on retirement.

Best you dismiss the idea.

well, generally for example in education, you need academic ranking.. asst prof or better. Political, the ability to bend over as far as you go.. special expertise in a specialized field.

The immigration folks are making things more difficult to retire here...the focus is we like your money now leave..

Of course you have checked all the required funds you will need to show your ability support yourself while retired.

good luck

You can't buy houses in Thailand ,and even if you could there are better ways to draw income from your money.

Nonsense ! Especially that first sentence which is not even Capitalised !

How are the "immigration folks" making it more difficult to retire in Thailand ?

Provide evidence please .

Buy and rent houses in Greece. The income can be transferred to Thailand if needed.

i mean if i own 49% of house 51% to a thai, can i rent?

The question to ask is "would this be a wise move". Many would say not.

If you are determined to proceed make sure you get some very good legal advice before committing your assets.

No offense but maybe you could look into requirements for a work permit. If you intend running your own business you have to employ thai along with other requirements. As for buying property to obtain rentals, as some people have pointed out, you have better options also safer options.

Why are people making comments about immigration making it more difficult to retire here?

Most people have no problems with immigration.

Some farangs go to immigration office and get agitated about silly things, yes some immigration officers like to show their importance but most are helpful and obliging.

They change this change that, some say, rules have not changed, it is not more difficult than last year or other recent years.

Did you mean Western caucasians, or as I suspect, you meant foreigners ?

Most of the agitators in immigration offices are Western Caucasians if various postings on here are to be believed!

Visas just give entry to the country and no visa allows you to work. You may be able to get a non 'B' visa for conducting 'business' but that does not allow you to work. The other version of non 'B' visa allows you to apply for a work permit to work in Thailand. However, a work permit is only available as an employee of a company, so you would need to be employed by an existing company or set up your own. Setting up a Thai company is possible, but often impractical and would require a 51% Thai ownership.

Work permits are issued for a specific job and location. You can't have more than one WP although it's possible to have two employers and more than one location with one WP.

If you are new to Thailand I respectfully suggest you live here first and explore business opportunities over time before jumping in. The system is not set up for foreigners to work unless it's for a Thai company (with a few exceptions). It's a great place to retire to, but not for setting up in business.

You can buy houses but can't own the land they sit on so it's a non starter. If you wanted you buy and rent out condos you could but would require a WP if you were managing them yourself.
