Minister Chatchai stresses continuous aid for farmers

BANGKOK, 23 February 2016 (NT) - Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Gen.Chatchai Sarikulya has clarified the ministry's agricultural reform policy while emphasizing continuous assistance for the drought-affected farmers.

The minister said after a seminar on Monday that the ministry would reform the agricultural sector by reducing the costs of production while increasing the competitiveness of Thai agricultural produce. The reform would also take place in the fields of management and maketing, said the minister.

During the seminar, the ministry's executives shared their knowledge and experience for concrete implementation of the reform policy and effective solutions to farmers' problems.

As for the current drought situation, the minister said he had instructed all departments under the ministry to continuously assist the drought-affected farmers. Gen.Chatchai expressed his confidence that most people were satisfied with the government's assistance for the farmers.

They might as well book this venue for next years seminar now as they will be back discussing the same subject this time next year sadly. Whatever the reason is for this shortage of water they don't seem to be addressing it and are just hoping it will suddenly fix itself.. And I know about the Dam water being released a few years ago

The reason for the shortage of water is lack of precipitation. Waiting and hoping for it to fix itself is the time proven way of dealing with drought, but if you know some way of "addressing it" please enlighten us.

BTW dams are a good way of mitigating both drought and flood. Now we need some way of isolating them from ignorant and self-serving politicians.

If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll keep having what you've always had.

Time to create new ways to farm and develop alternative crops/foods that are better adapted to the present ecological situation. Farming is not above the evolutionary process. Those who adapt better to the environment will have a more likely chance to survive. Ancient methods will not succeed in modern times. Unfortunately for Thailand, this message has not sunk in yet and in the future, the government will spend more time making up excuses for it agricultural policy failures than it will marketing its products.
