PM says two-step enforcement of the charter is misinterpreted



BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha clarified the alleged two-step enforcement of the new constitution, saying that it was a misinterpretation of the provisional chapter.

He said it was all about the transition period during which some sections of the charter might not be enforced to pave the way for reforms to proceed otherwise there might be problem.

He further said that, during the transition period, certain segment of the administration needs to be adjusted for instance whether the Senate is necessary during this period. This, he maintained, was intended to make the next government stable and strong.

The prime minister went on saying that the five-year plan for reforms and the national strategic plan for 20 years were designed as guidelines for the next government to follow without which the government may stray out of course.

He denied the accusation that his government intends to stay on after the next election. However, he noted that the transition period might take up to five years or less, depending on the state of political situation.

He brushed asked the suggestion that the National Council for Peace and Order has wanted to stay on during the transition period.

“Leave me alone and do not pay attention too much on me. My duty is to make sure that the country is in peace so that there will be an election,” said the prime minister.

With so many levers of control embedded in the draft charter, elections will bring a civilian government and his shadow government will retain the power.

Does anyone have any idea what these much-mooted reforms are? I understand that the three most corrupt bodies in the nation - the military, police and courts – are exempt from reforms under this lot, but by reforms are we just seeing the political system "reformed" to ensure the people of Thailand never get to vote in a government of their choice again? To date, that seems to be the only "reform".

"transition period during which some sections of the charter might not be enforced" Might? Might is pretty loose word. If not enforced, why have them in there? Junta is in no rush to leave... "time is of the essence" and they will take as much time as they want.

Elections next year yet he will continue to remain during his 5 year transition. This is how I understand this OP. And he doesn't want the people to focus on this transitional period or that he will remain during it. So what is the point of having an election? Maybe I misunderstood reading this.

Yet when the military was called upon by the Yingluck regime to help maintain peace during the February 2014 elections in a legally declared State of Emergency, the military refused. PDRC then successfully barred 10% of voters from reaching their designated voter stations that became the basis for a constitutional court ruling to invalidate the entire election!

The military clearly has its own agenda when it comes to keeping the peace - it's when it is keeping a piece of its own sovereignty.

Silly me, I thought the electorate kept the government on track. So there is a third entity which also does that. Sounds like same same but different from universal suffrage .

Whatever the colour it will be powerless. He who must be obeyed will be pulling the strings.

Makes me wonder why any civilian politician, of any shade, would want to try to govern this country. I can't even read a newspaper if someone's looking over my shoulder.

A new dance craze the election two step. Or is it a three step one forward two back. Years since I did any dancing cannot remember anymore. Oh well I guess the country will soon get into step with PM 5 year or 20 year plan. Seems China had the same program decades ago.

Well, now, it's clear that is what Suthep and the PDRC meant with "Reforms before elections"...

They want a fake democracy.

Sriksir is dead on with the fake-PM's words about "ensuring peace so that there will be an election".

He had that chance months before he was "forced to take control" of the country.

In other words, don't read the fine print. Just listen to what I say, and that's the law (for now).
