DDC scrambles to eradicate Aedes dengue outbreak

BANGKOK, 24 February 2016 (NNT) - Department of Disease Control (DDC) Director General Amnuay Kajina said the number of dengue fever patients is predicted to be higher this year than last year or about 160,000.

The highest number of dengue fever patients was recorded last April during an outbreak of dengue fever. He said Aedes mosquitoes which could possibly cause a dengue outbreak are yet to be eradicated while the public are yet to be aware of it from the early part of this year.

The DDC has advised people to clean their houses, throw garbage away and turn over water containers to prevent dengue fever.

I read recently that scientists can use genetically modified mosquitos to help reduce the population by some % below the deemed critical threshold. This was in relation to zika however it's the same mossie so can this not be used to help with dengue?

But not, apparently, by actually doing anything other than tell the public what they already know. How about spraying a few streets outside the capital, for a start.? Years ago, fumigation teams invariably descended on our Cha Am soi at least once during the dengue fever season - but not for a year or two and not now when they are needed more than ever.
