DDC steps up protection against entry of diseases through borders

BANGKOK, 24 February 2016 (NNT) – Three agencies have joined hands to intensify protection against the entrance of diseases through the Kingdom’s border with an emphasis on Ebola and MERS.

Director-General of the Department of Disease Control (DDC), Dr. Amnuay Kajeena, opened the National Disease Control Seminar 2016 organized in collaboration between the department, the Ministry of Transport and the Immigration Police Bureau. The discussion's focus was on safeguarding against the entry of diseases at border check-points, where travelers have increased due to the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community.

An increase in the migration of laborers has necessitated stricter use of the Communicable Diseases Act of 2015 and the National Hygiene Law of 2005.

The DDC has initiated cooperation with relevant agencies to develop its border controls and serve as the ASEAN center for knowledge on deterring the transnational spread of diseases and medical care.

Presently, Thailand operates 68 border quarantines. The DDC operates 61, while the remaining 7 are administrated by their respective provincial public health offices.

This is a joke while the "health check" for the application for a work permit takes 5 minutes just to check the blood for syphilis. No HIV, Hepatitis or Tuberculosis check required.
