The Christians held in Thailand after fleeing Pakistan

After reading the article I'm really not sure why people are bashing Thailand! Thailand are allowing the UN to effectively have illegal aliens in Thailand. Living freely without visas etc. But according to the article " The Thai immigration police have lost patience with the UN's failure to process asylum cases in good time" which to be fair isn't Thailand's fault. It's the UN's fault. Not getting upto date visas for them is the UN fault. Not giving legal counsel.. UN fault.. In fact it actually seems that Thailand is pretty relaxed about these Christian Pakistanis.

Did you read the full BBC article? Yes the UN is not faultless, but the Thai authorities actions are far from relaxed.

Uncaring and even callous would be more accurate words. These refugees have fled appalling religious intolerance and persecution, to gaol them for doing so is wrong.

Why did they pick Thailand, a very prominent Buddhist country, not the most geographically close, not culturally close, and not a signer of the UN convention to come to?

Why don't you watch the program before asking questions that have already been answered?

Thailand has about 100,000 ASYLUM SEEKERS.....this is an internationally recognised status.....Thailand is ignoring international law - ignoring treaties they have either signed or avoided and are claiming to treat these people "humanely" - in reality they are CRIMINALISED - they have not broken any law....and detained or imprisoned........this is yet another stain on Thailand's international image.

Thailand wants the rest of the world to see them as a "paradise" thew "land of Smiles" yet they continually are found abusing human rights, from human trafficking, mistreatment of religious and racial minorities and now the detainment of asylum seekers

........ they can't have their cake and eat it.

This BBC documentary aired again on BBC World this morning again from 10:30 to 11 am. local time.

Apart from the asylum focus on the program, it's also a chilling look at the conditions inside the Immigration Detention Center (IDC) provided through apparently undercover (secret) filming the BBC did inside the facility.

The program takes aim at the Thai government for supposedly flouting international rules about not locking up children with adults, and also at the UN CHR for not doing very much to assist or protect legitimate asylum holders (as I guess we already knew via the recent case about the China dissident secreted back to China after being arrested here).

Looks like this morning's airing may have been the last scheduled one -- at least for now.

If you ever wondered what happens to farangs to get in legal/Immigration trouble here in Thailand, you need to take a view of this program's imagery of life inside the IDC.
