Thailand appointed ASEAN’s Sustainable Development Coordinator

VIENTIANE, 29 February 2016 (NNT) – Thailand has been appointed as a coordinating nation to the United Nations, on sustainable development in the ASEAN region, as confirmed from the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Retreat.

Thailand was appointed as a coordinating nation, ASEAN Foreign Ministers Retreat on 27 February 2016, answering to the United Nations on sustainable development in the ASEAN region, pushing forward more development with central focuses on the people.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 10 ASEAN member states, including Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Don Pramudwinai, who has expressed Thailand’s stance on sustainable development stating that the agenda will play an important part in the development of ASEAN community.

ASEAN members have agreed on the development of the region with central focus on its people, as well as increasing participation from all sides, reducing development gap, and inclusion, assuring that no one will be left out.

Thailand has also proposed additional cooperation within ASEAN and to establish joint stance, prior to holding negotiations with trade partners, to allow ASEAN to determine the direction of negotiations, striving towards maximized benefits to the ASEAN bloc.

There can be a downside to answering to the United Nations on sustainable development in the ASEAN region.

For example, if Thailand's GDP growth rate continues at only half the rate of the other ASEAN members and deny free movement of labor across Thai borders, it might have to answer why it should continue to be the coordinating nation.

Does sustainable development encompass water management, flood mitigation and drought planning?

No not really, its more about explaining to a chap with a tin shack, no running water, and a 15 year old Honda Motorbike why he should be happy with his lot; before you climb into your new SUV and whizz off to the next meeting.
