Channel 3 urged by media organisations to suspend Sorayuth from duty

BANGKOK: -- The Thai Broadcast Journalists Association and the News Broadcast Council of Thailand issued a joint statement on Tuesday urging the management of Channel 3 TV to rethink its handling of Sorayuth Suthasanajinda’s court case.

The two broadcast media organizations met Tuesday to discuss the Criminal Court’s conviction of the celebrity news anchorman of Channel 3 TV and concluded that the court’s verdict and the inaction of the TV station toward Sorayuth had impacted on the image of the media profession as a whole, prompting the public to question the ethical conduct of the media.

Although the court case against Sorayuth is pending an appeal to the Appeals Court, they said that the Criminal Court’s verdict was sufficient to prove Sorayuth’s involvement in the wrongful acts which are both a criminal offence and ethical misconduct.

The public has an expectation that Channel 3 should demonstrate responsibility and set a role model in laying down ethical standard by suspending Sorayuth from hosting TV programmes at least until his court case is over.

Yesterday's Post reported the station management as treating the conviction as a ' personal ' matter, that programming wouldn't be affected and it would be up to the production company to decide if the host would be changed.

Hard to believe the station seems somewhat unconcerned about the status of the anchor irrespective of an appeal pending.

As is so often the case here there's likely to be more to this than meets the eye.

for a suspension or dismissal to happen, you have to hit channel 3 in the pocket...Advertisers should threaten to pull out if this guy isn't gone...He rifled 138 mil baht!!!

Advertisers buy ratings. They have no social conscience unless they see that their customers/consumers have one. I have seen no evidence of such in Thailand ... though I would like to be proven wrong in this case.

I was involved, until recently, in the advertising business. It would be telling to see what has happened to the shoe ratings since this "scandal" emerged. Anyone on TVF that has access to ACN TV rating care to share this tidbit?
