BANGKOK, 2 March 2016 (NNT) – The Department of Probation has joined with the Thailand Institute of Justice and the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI), Japan to develop standards for rehabilitating narcotics offenders in the ASEAN region.

Minister of Justice Gen Paiboon Kumchaya recently kicked off an international seminar on developing rehabilitation of narcotics offenders within the ASEAN region community. The meeting was organized for experts from the around the world to exchange ideas on handling prisoners of narcotics crimes.

The minister affirmed that Thailand’s care for such criminals would emphasize rehabilitating their communities as well, and seek to persuade drug addicts to voluntarily join in rehabilitation programs.

Volunteers for rehabilitation will either be sent to medical facilities or correctional camps and follow up observations will be performed once they complete their rehabilitation process. He let on that the ministry may also amend narcotics laws for those sentenced to no more than 4 years of prison to be able to apply for transfer to a rehabilitation center.

The seminar is being attended by community workers as well as narcotics agencies from across ASEAN and Japan.
