Deputy PM: Police Chief's appointment should remain Police Board's duty

BANGKOK, 3 March 2016 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Gen Prawit Wongsuwon has rejected the idea of authorizing the Office of the Police Commission to appoint the National Police Chief while affirming that no position buying will take place.

After the National Reform Steering Assembly expressed worries about the issue of position buying within the Royal Thai Police, Gen Prawit has responded by giving his assurance that such practice will definitely not be allowed to occur during the current administration. Should any evidence emerge, he said the government would be willing to investigate.

Regarding the police reform process, the deputy premier argued that the selection of the National Police Commissioner-General should be kept under the responsibility of the Royal Thai Police Board, which is chaired by the Prime Minister, instead of being assigned to the Office of the Police Commission.

Gen Prawit also reported the government’s progress in suppressing influential groups, saying suspects have been identified and more investigations are underway.
