Expectations that ticket prices are set to rise for foreign visitors to the Angkor temple complex in Siem Reap province were confirmed on Tuesday when Minister of Finance and Economy Aun Porn Moniroth announced that the price had been approved in principle, but when and how much remains unclear. Prices will go up in the “near future,” the minister said, without elaborating.

A spokesperson at the state agency that manages the World Heritage site – the Apsara Authority – said, however, that plans for a price hike had been in the works for about one year. Business representatives were also unsurprised by the announcement. “It’s time for an increase [in ticket prices],” Apsara spokeswoman Choa Sun Kiriya said yesterday, noting that prices had not risen for two decades.

Ticket sales for Angkor Wat to go online
Fri, 4 March 2016

Finance Minister Aun Pornmoniroth announced plans for the new e-ticketing platform on Monday during the unveiling of the new state-run Angkor Institution that will manage ticket sales for the Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap.

“I think the existing IT system should be reworked and renovated,” he told reporters. “Currently, there is no proper server, registry account and the ticket data system is not homogeneous.”

A sad sign of the times - commercialism over everything. When I was there in 1965 there were no charges for entry anywhere. All one had to pay was for the cyclo-pousse driver to take you around in his bicycle trishaw, or for a taxi out to Banteay Srei. I also got the best exchange rate for my Malayan ringgit at the government souvenir shop in Siem Reap.
