BANGKOK: -- Former boss of Klongchan Credit Union Cooperatives Supachai Srisupa-aksorn was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of embezzlement by the Criminal Court on Tuesday.

Mr Supachai was accused of ordering officials to make eight withdrawals amounting to about 22 million baht from the accounts of the cooperatives and transferring the money into his account and that of another individual.

Prior to the reading of the verdict on Tuesday, Mr Supachai who earlier denied the embezzlement charge asked the court to change his testimony by pleading guilty to the charge. The court first sentenced him to 32 years imprisonment but commuted it by half to 16 years due to his confession.

The case was the first ruled by the court. Mr Supachai and three other colleagues were accused of embezzling more than 12 billion baht of depositors’ savings deposited at Klongchan Credit Union Cooperatives. The case was investigated by the Department of Special Investigation and is now pending with the public prosecution.

Mr Supachai and 11 other associates were also accused of misappropriating about 6 billion baht from the cooperatives. The case is pending with the public prosecution.

This is one of the reasons the 'justice' system here is so flawed. Protests his innocence and then just before a verdict is read changed his plea to guilty for a halving of the sentence.

Now comes the appeal of the verdict and granting of bail.

I agree 100% and all chances for appeal should be gone if you plead guilty. Anyway again it shows how flawed the system is. I bet a normal criminal could not have changed his verdict but only HISO ones.
