Thailand's Airline Industry is in Need of an Overhaul

BANGKOK: -- In late February, passengers lined up at Nok Air’s check-in counters, waiting desperately to board their flights. The sight was no surprise, even though none of the passengers were expecting problems.

Nok Air’s troubles began on Valentine’s Day when pilots went on strike, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The debacle was the result of a number of growing issues that are threatening small regional airlines in Thailand.

It wasn’t just pressure to comply with international aviation standards and internal conflicts caused by restructuring that led to Nok Air’s troubles. The carrier was also dealing with a shortage of staff as the regional aviation industry continues to grow at a rapid pace.

Why over whole now when you can do it just after a plan or two will be either involved in a catastrophic accident or

fall out of the sky? I mean this is the Thai way, preventive maintenances, paying attentions to details and common sense

are a very rare commodities in this country......

Tell us something we didn't know. The air industry has needed an overhaul for some time now. Isn't that why they have yellow status from half the world's aviation inspectors?

Once again, Thailand has shown their mastery at maipanrai for everything until it is a day late and a dollar short. Then the race to make it look OK after.

Agree. The key words in your post being "to make it LOOK ok." There is a critical failure here to really address root causes. Usually what we get are empty words from various gov't agencies about crackdowns etc., but rarely any meaningful action. The Thai solution to complex problems is to simply apply new paint. If it looks new, it must be new. But underneath is the same old rot. Only a matter of time before it rears its ugly head. And we all know these problems quietly multiply out of view until there is a catastrophic incident. Then its apply more paint. Just a double coat this time.

I'm not sure if my following comment is a compliment or a criticism, but at least their planes don't fall out of the sky with the same frequency that their busses drive over cliffs. coffee1.gif

Why pick on the airlines everything needs an overhaul. Working on the canal boats at present. Next will be a shocking mechanism that will zap bus drivers if they fall asleep or drive over the yellow line (if there is one)

Actually there is. Fatigue monitors/alarms are used in industry for heavy mobile equipment operators (at least where I have worked).
