A question about "Non b visa assistance"

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am interviewing with a school for a teaching job and they say they offer "Non b visa assistance and work permit ";

What is the difference between the two? do I need to exit Thailand to get the visas?

Which one is necessary to teach. I am quite confused.

Also, what happens if, for example, I quit the job, will the visa be canceled?

Thank you so much

Assuming you are currently on a Tourist Visa, you must leave Thailand and get a Non-B visa at a nearby Thai Embassy. The school will provide the needed documents. The school must apply for your work permit and give you the receipt to show they applied. Once you return to Thailand with the Non-B visa the work permit can be issued. It sounds like the school knows the full process.

You need a non-B visa to work here, but to work legally you will also need a WP from the labor department so you need both. First you get the visa (probably form the Thai embassy in Venetian, Laos) and when you have your visa you will go back to the school and they will take you to the provincial labor department to apply for WP.

The assistance can be anything from just supplying the documents needed for visa and WP all the way to actually take you to all the places, help you fill in your applications, pay the fees for visa and WP and so on.

Incorrect, visas are not cancelled, only extensions of stay.

There is no requirement for the work permit application being completed to get a non-b visa for teaching. That is only needed when working for a company.

  • The visa is required to gain entry to the country and does not give you permission to work. A work permit gives you the permission to work for a specific job/employer/location.

It is likely you will be issued with a single entry non 'B' visa that will give you a 90 day permit to stay on entry. During the last 30 days of the 90 you will apply for a 1 year extension of stay at the local immigration office on the basis of work.

The non 'B' is used and becomes invalid the second you enter the country.

Your extension of stay will be linked to your WP so if you quit your job the extension of stay finishes. You must leave the country or apply for another extension of stay if you qualify.

thank you.

so technically the non b visa is valid for how long?

my tourist visa expires on mid May. What happens if for some reason I don't get the Wp: will the non b visa automatically cancel my tourist visa?

thank you.

As single entry non immigrant visa ('B') would be valid for 3 months from the date it is issued. That is not how long you can stay in Thailand, but how long you have to enter. You can enter once within that 3 month window and at the point of entry the visa becomes used/invalid. On entry the IO grants you permission to stay which in the case of a non 'B' would be for a period of 90 days.

It's important to understand the difference between a visas validity and period of stay. See the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs website.

7. Please note that the period of visa validity is different from the period of stay. Visa validity is the period during which a visa can be used to enter Thailand. In general, the validity of a visa is 3 months, but in some cases, visas may be issued to be valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years. The validity of a visa is granted with discretion by the Royal Thai Embassy or Royal Thai Consulate-General and is displayed on the visa sticker.

8. On the other hand, the period of stay is granted by an immigration officer upon arrival at the port of entry and in accordance with the type of visa. For example, the period of stay for a transit visa is not exceeding 30 days, for a tourist visa is not exceeding 60 days and for a non-immigrant visa is not exceeding 90 days from the arrival date. The period of stay granted by the immigration officer is displayed on the arrival stamp. Travellers who wish to stay longer than such period may apply for extension of stay ....

I assume you have a single entry tourist visa in which case it has already "expired". You have permission to stay until mid May. You can start the WP process before getting the non 'B, but you wont be able to work until you have a non 'B' visa entry/permit to stay.

p.s. It is possible to convert your tourist visa entry to a non immigrant entry (non 'B') without leaving the country. It's more paperwork and visits to immigration, but maybe your employer wants to go that route and will help you through the process. One way or another you need to enter the country using a non immigrant visa. So it's either a trip to a thai embassy/consulate in another country so you can physically enter using the correct visa or achieve it through an admin process.
