Sukhumvit pedestrian bridge safe, deputy mayor assures

PATTAYA:--Pattaya officials reassured the public that a temporary pedestrian crossing built over Sukhumvit Road near Pattaya School No. 5 is sturdy enough to handle nine metric tons of foot traffic.

Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh addressed public fears and complaints March 5, saying residents assertions that the crossing was unsafe were completely off-base. The pedestrian crossing passed inspection and certification by the Department of Highways and is certified to bear a load of 9,000 kilograms.

Locals have complained to city hall and posted online that the new overpass seemed rickety and would shake when approaching the center. They also were worried by signs placed at each end saying the maximum load was 150 kilograms.

Ronakit explained that the signs were worded confusingly, and the 150 kg. limit is per square meter, not for the entire 42-meter span.

Surely at busy times there would be an excess of 100 people.

But it's rated at 9000 kgs, anout 150 people (in your words), so "an excess of 100 people" will be OK.......provided it's not more than 150 !

The department of highways may certify walk over bridges but they seem to negelect the bridges on the highways where trucks are overloaded, and Construction was short changed when they were installed.

The gurantee by the deputy major on behalf of the ''department of highways'' to rating, safety and certification would / should raise more questions instead of providing answers to citizen concerns about their safety. Not sure which will take place first a bridge failure or a mass electrial shock to those exposed to wet bare wiring which comes in contact with the metal bridge.

Ummm...150 X 42 = 6300

'Confusingly' indeed, then again I suppose it's 1.42857 meters wide.
