"Download much? The explosion of data-hungry devices in recent years has put a huge strain on the world’s ageing fourth-generation wireless network. The fifth-generation, or 5G, is expected to roll out between 2018 and 2020, increasing current bandwidth by a factor of 1,000 and accelerating data transfer speeds tenfold. That means 5G network users will be able to download a high-definition feature-length movie to their cell phones in a few seconds, and self-driving cars will be able to respond to traffic conditions and communicate with other vehicles in real time. The network will also provide enough runway for the Internet of Things, in which smart appliances and machines use sensors to collect data both from the environment and about their own inner workings – a wind turbine sensing that its blade needs repairs, for example – and then store and share that information with humans and other machines over networks. Equipment manufacturers, mobile network operators, and semiconductor suppliers are already trying to influence global standards for connectivity and otherwise preparing for a 5G world, says Credit Suisse.
