Industry minister confident more foreign firms apply for investment promotion in Thailand

BANGKOK, 15 March 2016 (NNT) – Industry Minister Atchaka Sibunruang has visited four countries including Japan, the United States, Russia and Belarus in February to seek foreign investment in Thailand.

The target groups include major companies, businesspersons and new markets in accordance with the plans proposed by a subcommittee on each cluster.

She had an opportunity to clarify the policy for promoting investments in special economic development zones in a cluster pattern as well as various supporting measures in order to expedite decision-making and lead to the creation of 10 targeted industries in the future.

In addition to directly creating awareness and understanding among targeted investors, a good opportunity will open for Thai entrepreneurs to do business matching.

The industry minister was confident that there would be more foreign companies interested to apply for an investment promotion in Thailand from March.

Another post intended to placate the masses. Interior Minister Atchaka Sibunruang has little concept of what is required to attract foreign companies to Thailand. She has an impressive resume in terms of education, and very little real world experience in industry. Mostly all book learning. Does that translate into the real world?

Neighboring countries are offering 10 year visas for foreign executives, the ability to buy a home and land, tax incentives, tax holidays, tax deferments, and a multitude of other reasons to locate there. In addition they are offering highly motivated workers, and a skilled work force, with better understanding of the english language, than Thailand. And a democratic government, in the case of Malaysia, India, the Philippines, and Indonesia. In addition some of those countries have a functional police force, some law and order, some traffic safety, some rights for foreigners, lower import duties, a simpler and friendlier visa process, and more. Can Thailand compete with that?

Dr. Atchaka Sibunruang serves as a Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Industry. Dr. Sibunruang served as a Director-General of Department of Industrial Promotion at Ministry of Industry and also served as its Deputy Permanent Secretary. She served as a Secretary General of Thailand Board of Investment and Director-General of The Office of Industrial Economics
