If you actually mean, as I suspect you do, a one year extension of stay for retirement yes it is a very simple process if done in Bangkok but requires two trips to immigration to convert from visa exempt entry to a 90 day non immigrant O visa. You will need proof of financials inside Thailand or Embassy letter of income or combination prior to visiting immigration.

The above costs 2,000 baht. Then you have 90 days to obtain a normal one year extension of stay costing 1,900 baht.

You can do a conversion to a non immigrant visa from a visa exempt entry but you will only have 15 days to do it from the date you enter the country (minimum of 15 days remaining rule). You though apply for a 30 day extension and then apply for it.

Where will you be staying after your enter the country? If not living in or near Bangkok it might be easier to make a trip out of the country to get a single entry non-o visa at a nearby embassy or consulate after you have the financial proof needed.

No. If you want a non immigrant 'O-A' visa you will have to apply in your home country or country of legal residence.

If you a looking to achieve a 1 year extension of stay based on retirement you would need to go through an admin process at an immigration office (probably Bangkok) that converts your visa exempt entry to a non immigrant entry. Then apply for an extension of stay.

  • You need at least 15 days of your current stay remaining and it would require two visits to the immigration office.
    • On the first visit you pay 2,000 baht for them to process an application for a non immigrant visa for the purpose of later applying for an extension of stay. You will need the 800K in your Thai bank account on the day you apply OR a certified (by your embassy) income of 65K pm OR a combination of the two.
    • On the second visit, usually two weeks later, they will stamp a non 'O' visa in your passport that will immediately be used so they can also stamp a new 90 day permit to stay.
  • At this point, after two visits to immigration, all you have is a 90 day permit to stay granted by a non immigrant visa, which is the same as having physically entered the country with a non immigrant visa.
  • During the last 30 days of that stay you can go to your local immigration office and apply for the extension of stay (1,900 baht). This time the 800K baht must have been in your Thai bank account for at least 60 days OR you provide a certified (by your embassy) income of 65K pm OR a combination of the two.

Alternatively you can go to a Thai Embassy/Consulate in a neighbouring country to Thailand and get a non immigrant 'O' visa (2,000 baht). That will give you a 90 day permit to stay on entry and you apply for the extension of stay in the last 30 days, as above.
